Rust converter

What rust converter are people recommending. I used to have something that was painted on and it turned the rust black. Quite good but I can't remember what it was called.

Evapo is good in the ultrasonic cleaner for de rusting metal.

There are a great many options applicable to different contexts. Jenolite is still popular and widely available: It is based upon phosphoric acid and Rapid Milkstone Remover (Palatine Paints) is just as good at a quarter of the price.

My own cookbook for chemical treatment of rust is:

• Hydrochloric acid (Acid Brick Cleaner): Heavy, scaly rust. e.g suspension parts

• Citric acid (one cupful per pint): General light to medium rust e.g. flat panels, small parts

• Phosphoric Acid (Jenolite/Milkstone remover): Very light or flash rust/surface clean-up and prep prior to painting.

I don't have experience of Evaporust or Bilt Hamber products so will avoid speculating about these.

Picture below shows a small part given a day's immersion in citric acid solution indicating the marked effect given enough time.

A lot depends on the nature of the job. But I hope that's some starting thoughts on which other can improve.

Thanks guys. I've just started to clean up the hardtop that it got with the car. The rear lower corners are very bad and difficult to get at (double skin) . I want something I can spray on. Jenolite converter gets good reviews. I'll use Dinotrol once I've stopped the rust.

A task akin to painting the forth bridge! 🤣

FWIW, I’ve always found Jenolite to be really good.

My favourite rust treatment for some years has been Fertan. A bit different to most products.  I have used it on my cars , mowers, old metal windows during house renovation and on the canal boat. It's used a lot in the marine world.

Never let me down!
