Maninthecornershop
Hi - maybe a simple question from a new owner of a 13/60 but can anyone advise how to tighten the ignition switch in the dashboard, mine just rotates with the key and I cannot see/ feel any locking nut to hold it in place. Can the veneered dashboard be dropped forward to expose the back of the instruments/ switches to help with this ? Thanks all
johny
This is the drawing from one of the free to download workshop manuals and although for a GT6 the installation is very similar. Item 17 is the ignition switch and its held by the front nut that has a special tool to tighten it without damaging its chrome. However if that square castellated plate isnt present between the rear of the dash and the switch body (locked tight by the inside nut) so that its corners dig into the wood then the switch will always tend to rotate. Can you not get a hand up behind, undo the front nut and lower the switch down to look? It might involve some gymnastics, mirrors and swearing but is the quickest method - do make sure battery is disconnected before starting and take photos if unplugging wires from the switch...

johny
yes you have to be pretty sad to beat me😂Do you think its realistic Gary getting the switch out as Ive put or drop the dash forward?
GFL
It's awkward but you should be able to carefully undo the chrome lock nut and then reach up and ease the switch out to check it the spiked locking washer is present? If not, again it shouldn't be to difficult to make something similar out of a bit of thin steel with a suitable sized hole in it. johny
The plate is pretty tough spring steel I think so as not to deform when tightening the front nut. Then problem with undoing complete dash is that you might also have to undo other stuff like speedo, choke and heater cables to allow sufficient movement... Maninthecornershop
Thanks for the info both I will have a shot at the gymnastics (proficient at swearing) and see how I get on - the diagram is a real help.
Colin Lindsay
Loads of room round the 13/60 ignition switch, the dash is quite sparse compared to other models with the ignition switch low down and out on its' own. Very easy to get to underneath, in fact you're spoiled for room compared to the Gt6 or Spitfire owners. If you can't get hold of a bracket, a large toothed locking washer sometimes works. 1
Wagger
If putting hand up behind the dash, take any wedding rings etc off, or disconnect the battery. You could short something and burn a finger.
Paul H
This is what I use to tighten the switch. You might need to adjust the gap a bit It’s used for removing grinding discs Paul
Casper
Quote You might need to adjust the gap a bit and bend it something like 90 degrees for easier use C.
johny
It shouldnt need to be too tight as the rubber washer stops the front nut from coming undone while the metal plate corners have dug into the back of the dash, which is quite soft, to hold the switch🤞
