TR6 (PI) Fuel Pump

Good evening all,

Hopefully looking for some clarity and guidance from the knowledgeable people on here please...

The fuel pump (a Bosch type) has failed, power is getting to it, it seems to be drawing current but not working so a replacement is required.

Looking at usual suppliers I am looking north of £400 for a board with pump and pre filter on. However, it looks like Sytec pumps can be had for around £80 and filter for around £50 - which is a significant difference.

First question is  - which pump and filter are the right ones if I were to go that route or am I looking at completely the wrong thing give the huge variance in price? I can't seem to find any spec for the pumps / filters in the Triumph suppliers blurb.

Second question is around the PRV, which appears to be the original type.  It seems to be working fine so was planning on leaving it, however, given I am replacing the filter and pump should i be looking to refresh that too?

Lastly (for now) if i don't replace the PRV can i simply swap the pump / filter without checking the pressure as that is set by the PRV or should i be checking that anyway?  In my heart I am saying I should but as i don't have a fuel pressure gauge i will need to source that too.

At the end of the day if the suppliers kit is the best way to go that is where i will head 🙂

All thoughts and suggestions welcomed!

Thank you.

I would think it wise to change the filter at the same time as your pump. Sytec filters seem to be widely praised over on the TR forum and that's what I've got. However, I see no reason to change your pressure regulating valve (PRV) unless you know it too has a problem.

<THINKS> I suppose you know the pump is actually faulty? What if there was a blockage somewhere after - or before - the pump? A blocked fuel tank feed for example. Can you hear the whine which the pump normally makes? (Well, mine makes a gentle whining sound. The note changes as it pressurises the system before cranking the engine.)

Cheers, Richard

Thanks all for your responses, much appreciated. That is a good link to the TR register site Nigel and gives me a lead as to which pump to try (sometimes there is just too much stuff on the internet you can’t see the wood for the trees so thanks for the link). Prestige seem to be away until next week John (at least on eBay) but may talk to them as well once I have known sizes.
The pump is dead as a Norwegian Blue Richard, you are right in that they all make a noise but nothing from this one and I have checked power is getting to it (I will also change the filter as it is of unknown age and condition). I plan to strip the old one out this weekend so I can check fitting sizes then look to replace. For now I will leave the PRV and see what happens.
Cheers

Hi Paul,  I can't offer any advice regarding this as I've only got a lowly Herald....but I can offer some encouragement......get yer finger out son it's only just over a week till the Peak Run 😘

Spurred on by John’s encouraging words and removing one’s finger the car is now fixed!
In the end I went for an Opti Hi OTP020 pump and new Sytec Motorsport Hi Flow Fuel  filter from Glencoe (guided by one of the links posted above) and happily I was able to match up all the fittings ok. Given the imminent Peak run and Malvern I kept it simple and did a straight swap rather than try and incorporate any ‘improvements’ or replace parts that were working. Maybe during the winter I might revisit and look at the PRV, siting the pump outside, incorporating a larger feed pipe and plumbing in a standby pump.
Thanks for your advice and guidance as always.
