Truly Staggered

I attended the Historic Racing event held at Brands Hatch yesterday and was gob smacked at how many Triumph Stag owners came along to display their cars, I expected to see maybe 20 cars? No….. in excess of 150! they don’t float my boat personally (sorry about the pun) but an impressive turnout all the same, oops there I go again.

Photo doesn’t do it justice.IMG_4044.thumb.jpeg.796000ddae196f0c3c76ea699cc84114.jpeg

That's great to see. Stags have really come into their own in recent years; they were mocked and unloved for many years but are now being viewed as quite a refined little car. The country is still full of idiots who will quote stories from the 1970s of cooling problems but the survivors are these days mostly in the hands of competent owners who know how to maintain them. I never really felt the need to buy one but they look good and have some great features.

My wife`s Favourite "Classic". I went shopping for one some years ago, back when there was a LOT of overpriced and unreliable cr*p being touted about. Finished up buying an American Motorhome and living in it in Spain 6 months of the year instead. Now there`s a Deep money pit if ever you want one.

Still pretty cars though, one of Triumph`s best design efforts In my personal view. What I always wondered was why they never offered a 2.5 straight 6 option? I guess they where totally aiming at the US Market, where the V8 was king?.

Wanted a Stag in '87, but it was near the top of the 80's classic car boom and I couldn't afford one. So I lowered my sights and bought a Spitfire.

I'm reading Robson's Triumph "2000 and 2.5PI" book. Now, if only Leyland hadn't bought Rover when they did, because it put the kibosh on a (Triumph) V8 Triumph 2000. :(

Cheers, Richard

Only driven one once.
I took it for a test drive with a loose idea of buying it.
It was fitted with a Leyland P76 4400cc alloy V8.

It was rapid

A club member here has a Leyland 4.4 fitted in his Stag, believed to be a Leyland Aus Warranty replacement (they got fed up with new Stag engine failures), it's now married to a Supra 5 speed manual gearbox, a very nice car to drive. He hasn't gone the Datsun half shaft route yet BUT maybe the next project!

My first Vic Govt car here in 1974 was a P76 but unfortunately only a 6 potter but the P76 left the Holden and Ford alternatives standing, build quality was poor the glued in windscreen fell out sliding down the big flat bonnet and hitting the road ,but it didn't break! Oh and an emergency stop pulled the bench seat bolts out of the floor, interesting driving a car with a rocking seat! Still reckon it was one of the best of the 30 Govt cars I had over the near 30 years I worked for them.

I'm always amazed by the way every other Triumph for sale on eBay seems to be a Stag.

Lots got restored in the past by people thinking they would be the next car to rocket in value, so there is a disproportionate number still about today.

You can buy a decent Stag for less than it would have cost 30-odd years ago. Very poor long term investment!

The Brands Hatch day has become very popular with the Stag community, it is a good day out and often includes a parade lap if the timings work OK on the day.

The large line of vehicles driving from Claketts to the circuit gets some heads turning :)
