Speedometer

Ok, on the last couple of outings the speedo has decided not to register any speed above about 45mph, and under reading the actual speed as it reaches this limit. Before this recent limit it was working fine and very accurate when compared to a GPS.

The distance and trip recording is working fine and I confirmed this on my last outing when I filled with petrol, reset the trip and returned home on a route I use weekly with the modern.

I don't know if the following has any relation to this problem but:

A few months ago, well before the above problem appeared, I found a bolt on the drivers side footwell. It is very short 5/16" x 1/4" round head slotted. I thought it might be from the back of the speedometer but having just checked it against the two on the back of my spare MPH unit (see photo) it is shorted and thicker than these two even though the heads look the same so I don't know where it is from.

I'm not feeling up to doing the contorsions to look at the back of the speedo fitted and don't want at this stage to remove the unit, so any pointers are welcome.

Too big for them, but good call bearing in mind I didn't post a photo.

Update on this.

Speedo now working as it should and is accurate upto at least 120, that's Kph of course.

How did I sort it? Easy gave the car an oil & filter change a couple of days ago and this morning replaced the coolant, and washed through the system. Took car for a spin to get up to temperature and speedo working fine.

I did have one slight problem though - couldn't find 5th  gear. Simple answer to that, 4 speed box! Why did I try and find 5th? I'll put it down to weather conditions, driving with roof down on a hot sunny morning without a hat. The car may not have over heated but my brain must have.
