Richard C
Here's part of a Herald hood frame, ostensibly with a hinge. It's locked solid, and I'm pretty sure but not certain that it's meant to move. Anyone know for sure?
Colin Lindsay
There is some movement, but not a great amount given where it is on the frame. It pivots slightly as the hood is dropped, then back as it is put up again. I'd free it up if you're going to be using it but it doesn't spin right round or anything like that kind of movement. mpbarrett
yes should move and the bolt that holds that part to the rest of the frame allows it to pivot around the bolt. Worth making sure it all moves easily, makes a big difference to the way the hood goes up and down....
Richard C
Many thanks. You have probably explained why I decided to remove them in the first place - an obvious stress crack in one of the J shaped U irons due to the non-compliance of the hinges over a few decades. This time, I'm going to get the frame right before slapping on a new hood!
Steve P
Well worth getting all the moving parts free and lined up properly fitting on the car before throwing a hood at it, ask me how I know?. S
PeteH
Carefully check the headrail connection too, they are prone to cracking. Pete
Pdv
Hi Richard, There are two ways to free it one the pin can be drifted out with a punch cleaned lubricated and replaced, a garage did that for me or l have put in the logburner to burn off the rust and lubricated. Both worked well, I also gave it to a chap with oxyacecalene to heat it up but he then hit it with hammer and broke the casting so I amnow looking for a replacement or get it welded. The fact it is cast makes me feel drifting the pin out has to be done with care. Good luck Steve
Richard C
Well both sides freed up in the end. I didn't try to drift the pins out, but light tapping with a punch together with copious amounts of plusgas and the added leverage of a spanner bolted to the moving part eventually got things moving.
