FranksVitesse
The drivers door check strap has become detached inside the a pillar.Am I right to think that the only way to access for repair is to remove the door to cut a letter box in the side of the pillar to weld it back on? Thanks
johny
Theres some access with the footwell side cover removed but not sure if it gets to the strap....
FranksVitesse
Hi johny, unfortunatley not able to access from the inside to where the little blighter is. Oh happy days.
johny
Wait a minute though its all inside the door isnt it not the A pillar? Heres inside the door and the arm that protrudes just attaches with a pin to a pivot welded to the A pillar....
FranksVitesse
Sorry, mines the bit that fixes to the inside of the A pillar that has come adrift that the check strap attaches to. My car never seems to have an easy fix solution! The pleasures? of classic car ownership.
johny
Is yours a different design then because as the manual shows there shouldnt be anything inside the A pilar?
FranksVitesse
Its the bit that sticks out from the body that the pin goes through to attach the check strap that is loose. The strap has nothing to operate against to hold the door. I saw a youtube video on the subject by someone restoring a vitesse but after searching I am unable to find it now. johny
oh its the bracket the pin goes in to hold the end of the check strap and its actually fitted inside the A pillar to protrude out through a slot into the door opening. Think its an unusual failure as the force is when opening the door and it tends to get pulled out which is why its fitted from inside the A pillar. There shouldnt ever be much force pushing it in so yes guess no access as never intended to need it☹️ Could a replacement be welded on the outside surface of the A pillar? 68vitesse
Couldn't you drill the a post and plug weld the bracket back in place?. Regards Paul.
johny
but how, if no access into A pillar, do you get the bracket back up and held in place while welding?
