Carba1984
Hello, I have a noise in both rear wheels of my spitfire, I don't know if it's the differential or bearings, I have checked the liquid of the differential and it's almost in the plug, the noise is high with the gear engaged. img-1006_kJP8qYoL.mp4
johny
If you get the same noise on both sides its unlikely to be wheel bearings and sounds like the diff. However the test you are doing is not its normal operation (one wheel stationary and the other rotating) so could you try both wheels off the ground and with two people rotate them together? Carba1984
Podria probar, he pensado si podría ser algún tornillo flojo
johny
Yes thats a possibility but it would have to be a bolt in the propshaft coupling and still make the noise when both wheels are turned together....
Puglet1
Agree with johny because there is a high pitched”ringing “ in the background which sounds like it could be coming from the prop shaft tube?
Carba1984
The noise it’s in the propshaft but I don’t know If the buzzing when you drive is related to that noise. Look the video guys. img-1009_xSJp5I0J.mp4
johny
Yes it sounds very much like a loose bolt on the reverse of the flange is just touching the front bolts of the diff or possibly the universal joint has completely failed but it looks pretty new... Stratton Jimmer
I agree with Johny on this one. I had a clicking noise on my Spit which turned out to be an exhaust hanger flicking the UJ nuts. While not as loud as this one, the effect was very similar.
Pete Lewis
Quote have alook at the 4 bolts holding the front carrier to the diff casing these should be special wedglock tapered shank bolts and an internal star washer if one comes loose it fouls the prop bolts and will make a terrible noise (got that tee shirt a long while ago) the taper shank bolts are due to having big holes in the carrier and small threadbolts a std 3/8 unf bolt is not OK.in this fixing ... many places sell them https://rimmerbros.com/Item--i-132856 pete Edited August 9 by Pete Lewis
Carba1984
The problem is not the tinkling, the problem is the buzzing when driving, is it normal that when you turn the wheel you feel like braking with that noise?
johny
Cant here a buzzing noise Carba but that rattling, knocking noise as you turn the propshaft is not normal. Its an impact because as said previously you can here the propshaft ringing....
Pete Lewis
if a carrier front bolt has loosened the noise is AWFUL catches then locks up the prop completely Pete
Carba1984
I've checked everything and it doesn't make friction or loose screws
Pete Lewis
is the handbrake cable hanging down ??? there must be something alien making contact Pete
Carba1984
Yes, is hanging down and the handbrake only brake On top of everything
Carba1984
I don't know how to tighten it, I think I should tighten it on the part of the handbrake lever itself???
Carba1984
Guys, I come from the workshop, located the noise, it is the inside of the transmission shaft (prop shaft) it seems that the differential has no problems
johny
Good news! Any more information on exactly whats wrong with the propshaft?
Carba1984
We don't know but it looks like the crosshead or the needle bearing. Sorry I don’t know the name in English

johny
As Danny says that sounds like a universal joint (un cardan?) and their quality seems to vary enormously as prices goes from 10 to 100€ each....
Carba1984
Yes, Universal Joint but the problem It's that then you have to send him to balance everything back to a specialist
johny
You dont have to have it balanced after changing a universal joint as theres a good chance it will still run smoothly. Usually any imbalance is in the prop shaft itself so if it ran smoothly before and you reassemble it exactly the same way a new joint shouldnt upset things👍
JohnD
The flanges on a U/joints have four holes, spaced in two pairs so that they can be bolted together in only two ways. There is one U/joints at each end of the prop shaft, so test there are four possible positions. Of these one may produce bad vibration/noise, two some and one will run perfectly! Suggest you carefully label the flanges at each end, and try the combinations, until you find the sweet spot! John
Carba1984
But I think I hear the noise on the side of the gearbox. Is it the same connection? I think so, four screws to release. Do you have a UJ on each side? I would say that mine is the one in the photo but I'm not sure.
