Non factory overdrive

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

My new project is a vitesse with an overdrive fitted recently by a previous owner i.e. not in the factory.

The gearbox tunnel has a big hole cut out of it to allow for the new position of the gearstick (I assume I can get a replacement with the hole in the right position) and the gearknob has been replaced with a gearknob which includes the overdrive switch similar to the one I used to have in my old Triumph 2000 Saloon.

My question is - can you add a column mounted overdrive switch to a standard column and which parts are needed?

column stalk is all available and easy fit

I dont understand the gear stick hole change unless you are not using a 3 rail box and D type or

so whats fitted  single rail and J type  ????

tunnels come without the hole  so cut to suit

yes its one of these after market fibreglass covers that come with no hole and are universal fit for both Herald and Vitesse but as can be seen in the plastic version for the Herald the hole has to be further forward than in the Vitesse so either a PO made a mistake or the covers having a second life.

Theyre quite expensive so if yours fits well I would just make up a patch either in fibre glass or aluminium sheet shaped, sealed and screwed in place. Then you can line the whole thing inside or out (or both!) with self adhesive thermal sound proofing and even, as some owners do, add another cover to allow access to the oil level plug. Of course also make sure its also well sealed to the floor and bulkhead all the way round...

aha  its just had the hole in the 4 cyl position ,

as for which gearbox  (dont think that matters now)

3 rail  the normal has reverse left and forwards    single rail is to the right and forwards

D type OD the normal)  solenoid is low down on the drivers side

J type a later design the solenoid is low down on the passenger side
