DesM Posted August 14 Report Share Posted August 14 (edited) I'm changing the ignition switch but struggling to match up wiring and I'm not great at auto electrics 🙂 The new switch has 3 double and one single connections so in total 4 connections for 7 wires - see photo The old switch has 7 wires but appears to be 5 connections - see photos I tried to follow them in order around but no luck, can anyone help by telling me which wires (by colour) go to which spade on the new switch - thanks Edited August 14 by DesM Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

johny Posted August 15 Report Share Posted August 15 Hi, first Im not sure the old switch is wired up as per the workshop manual diagram. All the white wires should be together and the white/pink on its own separate terminal. The new switch doesnt look like its got any numbers on its terminals and also I hope its quality is good enough as it doesnt look great and we do suffer with after market parts quality quite a lot.... Its single terminal will be 1 and then going anti clockwise should be numbers 2, 3 and 5 but check these with a multimeter first: In off position no terminals are connected to each other inside. Turn key anti clockwise (auxilliary position) terminals 2 and 5 connect. Back again and to next position (run) 2, 3 and 5 connected, last position (start) 1, 2 and 3 connected. DesM Posted August 15 Author Report Share Posted August 15 (edited) Thanks Johny Very helpful reply thanks, the issue I have and I've been advised it is probably a switch issue is that when the ignition is on there is (as there should be) power on the wire to the coil (when its disconnected from the coil) but then as soon as I connect it to the coil the multimeter shows no power, the electronic ignition is also connected to the same positive on the coil and if I then disconnect it power is restored to the ignition wire/coil. johny Posted August 15 Report Share Posted August 15 Yes Im not sure what the second brown wire is as the diagram only shows one (N) on the switch (item 4) but its probably not important. Then I can see the pink/white (WK) is joined to the whites (W) on terminal 3 while 5 has a single white which again shouldnt be important although it means your auxiliary supply (radio?) only works with the ignition on and the single white wire will lose power in the starting position.... Now it gets a bit complicated because your car should have a ballasted coil (8) that is normally fed with 6v via the resistor (7). When the wire on +ve terminal is disconnected however it will show 12v as theres no current flow. This system might have been removed and a normal coil installed so recommend a look at it to confirm which type it is. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
DesM Posted August 15 Author Report Share Posted August 15 (edited) Thanks Johny Will have a look tonight after I get home, not sure there are any clear markings/labels still on the coil to confirm which type it is. Is the single spade on the new switch likely for the red/white wire ? I phoned Paddocks who supplied the new switch to see if they could advise on numbers for each connection but they couldn't. johny Posted August 15 Report Share Posted August 15 yes single terminal will be position 1 for red white wire but as I say check switch with a meter and you can be sure👍 The type of coil can be confirmed by its resistance about 3 ohms = normal 12v coil, around 1.5 ohms will be 6v ballasted one....
