Alex Back
Can anyone help with a possible replacement for an original SAH 26 camshaft, which was a fast road upgrade to the early 2 litre mark 1 engines ? i have a complete SAH engine from SAH Leighton buzzard, with triple webers, but it has suffered and got pitted components including the camshaft. any ideas for a direct replacement or alternative ? this cam was a 26/62 high lift .388” on inlet. also does anyone know if you can get stronger 3/8” head studs ( mark 1 engine and head ) as they are on the limit for torquing down ? do APR do a kit for the 2000 k 1 engine does anyone know of. many thanks
Pete Lewis
i have heard of the drill and retap to 7/16unf studs . the weakest link to the 3/8 stud is soft washers that deform and you loose torque . and they are special rated nuts no standard 3/8 nut will take 42 lbft Pete
johny
If you did resize the studs Pete do you think youd use the mk2 head gasket?
68vitesse
I used mini flanged nuts, without washers, on my MK1 2L as recommended elsewhere after being disappointed with the quality of the nuts and washers. Bought a bag of twenty and used the extra on the rocker pedestals, no idea if it's an improvement as only done just over a thousand miles since having the head converted to unleaded. Regards Paul. Josef
Moss’ various 6 cyl cam offerings are detailed here, doesn’t look like anything matches, but also I’m not really familiar enough with the notation being used to be certain. Moss’ supplier are https://www.kentcams.com/ who do appear to offer custom grinds so I expect that they’re your best bet.

johny
I suppose its just a case of using a hole punch on the mk1 gasket👍

I have a spare SAH cam sitting on a shelf that I bought from SAH back in the day. Trouble is I don’t recall the profile. Can anyone tell me how I can tell? Steve P
Any numbers on it?, I have a few SAH catalogues from way back when. S
Alex Back
Hello all, many thanks for your help and suggestions, I have some options now and managed to get the profile for the cam, which has a number 26 stamped on the end ( SAH number). there is a hotter cam with a 357 stamped on it so that gives me an option if I can find one, but the 26 profile is really a fast road cam. i have found Chris Witor has some useful data which is helping me chose what else I could fit. Best fit is to use a mk 2 Vitesse cam, would you believe, closest to the SAH 26… Rich, if you have an SAH cam ( 4 or 6 cylinder ?) look for a number stamped on the end of the cam shaft. let me know what you find, if anyone wants some more info on the SAH data and Chris Witor options happy to share, give me a call if needs be. looks like the best option is to use the larger 7/16” studs, and then a “ special “ gasket that is made for the job ( composite). best regards, Alex 07887-476129

rulloyd
Hi Alex. 6 cylinder. I put it in my GT6 but I replaced it to revert to standard mk2. I’m away at the moment, back on Monday next week. I’ll certainly take a look then 👍
Colin Lindsay
I've photographed the spec of that 26 camshaft just for everyone's information:
Alex Back
Thank you Colin just a number 26 is not a lot to go on…
thescrapman
Looks like the “26” is basically a Mk2 spec camshaft for a Mk1, with bit of extra lift. Perhaps try a TR5 cam, if they work OK with carbs.
