Paul H
Hi just test compression on my Mk2 Vitesse . Are they ok? 150 150 160 155 152 155 I ran the engine for 10mins removed vacuum , removed + on dizzy , isolated electric fuel pump , pedal full down on accelerator. Starter on for 10 Secs What would be compression on a new engine ? Paul
johny
look pretty good to me. Might be a bit higher on a new engine or a mk1 but depends what gauge you use😁

dougbgt6
Paul, Yes looks good. Most meters aren't very well calibrated, I have two, one reads 145 where the other reads 160! It's the difference between the individual readingd you're looking for, 150 to 160 is OK. Doug

daverclasper
Is it worth watching the gauge while cranking, to see how many compression strokes it takes for individual cylinders?. I don't know if they would differ anyway and maybe me being anal ?
johny
trouble is I wouldnt know what it means if they take different numbers of strokes anyway🤣
daverclasper
I think I do see, what you mean ! (or don't mean) 😆. As we know, as long as any different readings are within tolerance, then ok. In fact, if say by chance some cylinders showed pretty much the same compression, then it should, maybe take the same amount of time/compression strokes to get the readings?. I noticed that Paul had timed his cranking over, which is maybe, what I'm now wondering, is irrelevant,
Peter Truman
I did my Vitesse Mk2 last week hadn't done it for nearly 15 years, it's done 90k miles and the heads never been off! No name comp tester and I didn't calibrate the pressure gauge as I couldn't find a 14mm female attachment to check the gauge against the air compressor. Pistons 1, 2 & 3 - 173psi, 4 - 165psi, 5 - 174psi, 6 - 183 psi. Didn't try oil in No.4 to see if it was rings or valves? I did the daughters Mk2 Spit a couple of months ago and they were all around 155psi, the engine and head was rebuilt 15k miles ago, I used Cord rings. Wagger
Now I am being picky. You need all tappets adjusted exactly AND the camshaft could have just one ot two more worn lobes. Tin hat is ready.
