Josef
I spotted this at Beaulieu on Saturday and it was too much of a bargain not to get (I’ve also ended up with some 1980 Spitfire bits this weekend so have covered the whole TSSC production run). My cars all being built in 1969 so yeah, not all immediately useful… Anyway, the dash itself is too far gone so I will be stripping it and binning the hardboard. The dates on the switchgear are 6 60 (so Feb 1960) putting it in the first year of production so I thought I’d post some photos in case they’re any use for someone for reference at some point! Not sure the catch below the glove box is original? Interesting regardless.
Colin Lindsay
Thanks for posting; a real find with some very interesting points there. Can I highlight a few and steal some of your thunder, and show what I think I know? The support bar running the entire way across the car at the bottom of the dash has two brackets for the radio, one either side below the ashtray. Deleted in later cars but very useful in any Herald or Vitesse no natter the age. The heavy metal panel that supports the switchgear and cables is also very useful; hang on to that as it fits other later Heralds and gives a bit of extra rigidity to that area of the dash. The catch below the glovebox is for the 'chip basket' magazine holder that early cars had, a drop-down wire construction. The ashtray is also a different shape to later cars, narrower and more rectangular. It's a real pity about the dash itself, but that's the way they go, and I never found a satisfactory repair or touch-in that would take any of mine back to looking new. Josef
Nice info there, thanks Colin. The sort of things you pointed out are exactly why I thought it'd be a good thing to post!
Josef
Update on the dating slightly. The switches I’ve found are from Feb 1960 sort of time. The dash is dated 4 Aug 1960 though so it’s a little later.
