Puglet1 Posted Tuesday at 15:33 Report Share Posted Tuesday at 15:33 Hello All. An unusual engine noise started yesterday after driving the car for about five miles. It appears on idle and not when rpm is increased. It remains whether the clutch is dipped or not. I have removed the fan belt but it makes no difference. Its difficult to tell whether it’s from the front or rear of the engine but from the underside of the car it sounds more like it could be from the front. I have recorded the noise hoping that one of you experienced guys might be able to help. Hopefully, the video is attached. johny Posted Tuesday at 16:13 Report Share Posted Tuesday at 16:13 really does sound like a rotating element noise but I cant think what! However as a separate issue is the exhaust blowing somewhere as I think I can also hear the phutt, phutt of a leak?
johny Posted Tuesday at 16:15 Report Share Posted Tuesday at 16:15 Any vibration you can feel round the engine, without getting burnt, that matches the generation of the noise?
Puglet1 Posted Tuesday at 16:29 Author Report Share Posted Tuesday at 16:29 Hi johny - you have good hearing, there is an exhaust blow from the manifold- which I plan to do when I replace the cylinder head. Can’t feel any vibration at the moment.
dannyb Posted Tuesday at 16:32 Report Share Posted Tuesday at 16:32 I'd say timing chain and or tensioner. Sounded a bit like my spit a couple of weeks ago until I changed the worn chain. Danny

johny Posted Tuesday at 16:58 Report Share Posted Tuesday at 16:58 Get the big ol screwdriver out and have a CAREFUL listen round the engine including cam chain box - probably need an assistant to rev it a little....
Pete Lewis Posted Tuesday at 17:11 Report Share Posted Tuesday at 17:11 if it had the belt fitted i would plump for water pump gland but its not that cant seehear any connection with timming chain . i would have alook inside the rocker cover zone and the smith s valve diaphragm Pete
trigolf Posted Tuesday at 17:16 Report Share Posted Tuesday at 17:16 Have you tried to locate the noise with a DIY ' stethoscope' i.e. a long screwdriver held to your ear? A 'strikethro' screwdriver works even better at transmitting the noise.

trigolf Posted Tuesday at 17:35 Report Share Posted Tuesday at 17:35 Pete's caution is very valid! The sound does seem to sound like a rotating noise? Probably a very long shot - but could it be the crank pulley???🤔

Coincidentally, when I first start the engine it sounds like x1 tappet is noisy, I wonder if I have oil starvation somewhere?

Iain T Posted Tuesday at 19:18 Report Share Posted Tuesday at 19:18 Take the rocker cover off, at tickover there should be a slow drip of oil from each rocker arm. Iain
