Hearld 1200 Saloon - Front Brake Shoe - Suppliers Diminishing

Chaps,

As my Master cylinder innards gave out, I turned my thoughts to, and started looking for, suppliers of brake shoe sets for my drum brake Herald.

As we know, the TSSC Club Shop is currently not functioning.

So I went to buy a set of front shoes from J Paddock. But these were out of stock and they have no idea if their back order will ever be fulfilled or will discover that they are to be discontinued. He suggested I use Rimmers. (Do I hear the round-robin discussion about Rimmers being more expensive?)

But more to the point is, therefore, the lack of suppliers/refurbers. I noted the Club shoes were provided by 'Brake Engineering' who, when I then contacted them, fobbed me off quite quickly after asking if they manufactured/suppplied them but could not give them their part number (how could I?).

J Paddock's other suggestion was to ask if 'Brake Engineering' might re-line the shoes.

I have not yet gone this route as I'm sure there must be suppliers/refurbers (!) of these items . . .

Can anyone guide me in??

Fortunately, as far as I know, I am not down to the riverts yet, but at some point I'll need a set . . .

You'll recall I'm in the South East (Hernia Bay)

Thanks Chaps.

Best, Colin.

What about looking into shoe relining? Probably more expensive but you could have a proper Mintex uprated material which being your front brakes Im sure would be welcome....

Many many years ago when I were but a cub... I relined my own, and they were rare even then. I think I still have a box of copper rivets somewhere for them. Keeping the backplates safe and undamaged is the important thing - never throw them out!! - as they can be relined either by yourself or professionally. Possibly the same as Ford Anglia, though?

Think the Mintex uprated friction material is M20 isnt it? Certainly thats whats offered by some suppliers for other Triumph models rear applications...

Thanks Chaps:- for info, I found a re-liner in Rochdale. Axle set for £70 (fronts). Thought I'll make sure I have a spare axle set front & back. Drive the car whilst replacements are either found or sent away to be re-lined, no pressure. I've not looked into lining types - never had to - some perform better than others . . .

That company is Questmead, btw. (Hope it's allowed to name them). A more expansive search than one made whilst cooking dinner might reveal others more in my own vicinity. But certainly more likely to be found in the Midlands or further North I suspect.

Who Wheeler Dealers? Dont think they sell their services but I suppose if youve got deep enough pockets you can even get Edd China working on your car😂

They're some American guys who restore American cars, I think. :)

Going by that list from Rimmers, all those everyday cars mean they shouldn't be too hard to find front shoes for. (I gave my last set of front drums and uprights to a Lotus owner a few years back. Sanctimonious B**** he was too)

We've certainly found it worth going to Mintex uprated pads on here havent we so cant all be hype? Lotus owners eh, with their lovely looking exclusive cars, grrrrr

If I gave the car to Edd China, I'm sure he'd squeeze more speed out of her and install an overdrive gearbox too, but then I'd have to upgrade the brakes!! Shoe acquisition then becomes a moot point! 😃

Canley Classics list them as available, one of my preferred trusted suppliers.

Thanks for the recommendation Dick. We have plenty of them on the shelf, so no current supply issues.

Supply has been a bit flacky over the years, but we have always just about maintained availability.

Good to know chaps! Johny; When in the Herald I tend to allow a few more yards ahead of me than in something more modern. Obvs I can only imagine how much of an improvement discs are over shoes and I have had to stamp pretty hard on them from time to time - hoping these little bits of rubber hold out with the pressure transmitted through Goodridge aeroquip hoses! Byt generally, I'll read the road as best poss and brake just that little bit early. Seems to work OK . . . Best, C.

There is a theory that we should all drive with LESS safety systems because then people are more cautious👍

Things are so bad now they have to have cars scan the driver's faces to see if they've fallen asleep. What they need is for an enormous hand to come up out of the dash and slap the driver, very hard.
