Tipidave Posted October 25 Report Posted October 25 (edited) Hi again all… I am looking for a new 10 spline 6 1/2 diaphragm clutch to mate to a herald 1200 flywheel and spitfire 3 rail gearbox. Prices for a 3 part kit seem to range from £70 to £200 depending upon brand… I only want to do this once, don’t want to skimp but equally don’t want to waste money. What are the differences? Can anyone advise the most appropriate solution? The car is not driven hard and will be doing maybe 3000 miles a year. thanks again in anticipation of your collective wisdom Edited October 25 by Tipidave Picture
daverclasper Posted October 25 Report Posted October 25 Hi. I don't know about different brands, though, I normally use Canley Classics, as are dedicated Triumph buffs. I have also had good experience generally of James Paddock, both of these I have found have good prices . Others may be ok, though I have ltd knowledge. Dave
Paul H Posted October 25 Report Posted October 25 Another vote for Canleys . Purchased a new clutch setup for my Vitesse and price was about £70 and just over 2 years ago . Paul 1
Pete Lewis Posted October 25 Report Posted October 25 Ive used a number of canley clutches with no problems Pete
Tipidave Posted October 25 Author Report Posted October 25 Thanks I will speak to Canley tomorrow 😀👍👍.
Colin Lindsay Posted October 26 Report Posted October 26 Go for the best you can identify, not necessarily by price but by reputation. It's not a job you want to be repeating too soon, and cheaper copy clutches will wear amazingly quickly, so you'll want one that will last.
Pete Lewis Posted October 27 Report Posted October 27 i have years of experience with so called reconditioned please steer clear of any of such ideas i dont have the, room on here to tell you why just dont Pete
Tipidave Posted October 27 Author Report Posted October 27 I will speak to Canley classics on Monday. There seems to be consensus that they sell good quality.
jjc Posted November 8 Report Posted November 8 Interesting thread. I've just had a bad experience with a main brand clutch for a GT6 Mk2. The splines in the clutch plate were out of tolerance, it would not slide on the gearbox input shaft splines. I was very surprised as the brand is one that for many tens of years I would have trusted. But then my experience is with TRs not GT6s. I too will talk to Canley Classics. JJC
johny Posted November 8 Report Posted November 8 Are you sure its not the main shaft splines at fault. You really need to try the plate on another to confirm the problem...

Problem these days is: who owns the brand name? Some of the more traditional names have been long taken over by inferior manufacturers.
68vitesse Posted November 9 Report Posted November 9 And when you mention the problem to the supplier the reply is always nobody else has reported a problem. Regards Paul.
Tipidave Posted November 9 Author Report Posted November 9 Well I have now made my choice and made a purchase from Canley classics. It will be a while before the engine goes back in… and then I guess, time will tell! Thanks for the help 👍👍😀
jjc Posted November 11 Report Posted November 11 Don't see why the splines on the shaft should be a problem, the original clutch plate fits fine. So far the reaction from the supplier is "send it back" So far so good. JJC
johny Posted November 11 Report Posted November 11 The original clutch plate could have worn to suit? Is it that the new one wont even start to go on the shaft or snags along it?
johny Posted November 11 Report Posted November 11 Think I would first try running an oil stone (or failing that a fine grind wheel) by hand back and forth along each slot in the shaft just to ensure theres no burrs on the corners....
