Back around the early 200s I went to view a Herald 13/60, a locally-registered car but when I went to view it it was all covered over in a kind of resin - no seams, no obvious panel gaps, all sealed in and painted over - sills behind the doors, tread plates, rear valences, all solid with no gaps or lines. The boot floor was just a flat sheet of metal, no wheel well, and everywhere else was this kind of curvy almost waterproof look like a boat. Even the overriders were painted white. Never saw anything like it before, and didn't buy.

Here we are in 2024 and another 13/60 came up at an auction 300 yards from me; I saw it trailered past so had a look. Rough looking, not worth bidding on (went for £1350) but someone had done the same - all visible seams, sills at B-post and rear valences, covered over and painted out. Even the bumpers are red. I suppose it's easier than actually doing bodywork.

According to the auctioneer it came with the 'original dash-mounted flowerpot'. Those are getting rare, now. I do wish the new owner good luck, though.

One of ours at East Berks has a de-seamed GT6 mk3, no lip on the front of the roof, no rear wheel arch seams, even the join on the lower front wheel arches can't be seen. A lot of trouble to make the car look 'orrible!

OMG!. This was a "feature" frequently found on US Hotrods of the 50`s and 60`s. Where everything was sealed up/covered with Lead Load or filler. No seams and even the doors "welded" closed, often the roofline lowered the driver and any passengers climbed though the windows!. Anyone remember "General Lee" (Dukes of Hazard) similar treatment.

I spoke to a friend last night, one of the motorcycle fraternity that I'm surrounded by - he knows this car and knew the owner. The asking price two months ago was £500. As there was absolutely no interest then as a last resort he put it in for auction to try to get a couple of hundred and was not expecting the result. I'd have taken it for parts but it wouldn't be the first Herald I intended to break and ended up saving, or passing it on for restoration by a braver soul.

Oh dear! I too have seen the odd Herald or Vit at shows with the same treatment. Some body shops, who are only used to moderns, seem to think that all panel joins etc have to be slathered with filler. I remember having to instruct the insurance approved body shop - who were repairing my Vit, after being rear-ended (ahem), to NOT fill over any panel joins and check with me if in doubt!

That's not a flowerpot, it's a cupholder.

It's an ash tray! My modern doesn't have one, my GT6 does. How times change!

Look closer

That's a flower pot!  I have several similar ones at home.

Perhaps I could put them on eBay as Vitesse ashtrays... could be a nice little earner.

Guy, not far from us, used to recycle his old flower pots into "Bill and Ben" charcters. Allegedly a "nice little earner", he always had two or three by his front gate for sale!. I recycled nearly a bin full a few years back, they had been lurking behind a shed since we moved in in 2010!.

A bit better than your offerings currently on Gumtree here for sale an Aussie CKD by Aust Motor Industries (AMI) Herald 12/50 Coupe bit expensive at $19k and located in Tassie, not quite original ie wood dash, Dolly Wheels, alloy rocker cover, aftermarket steering wheel, but correct with 1200 engine and twin carbs, and correct chrome bumper overtrims.5fd296e5-217f-4990-a918-2155b332d69d.jpg.b52f3dc2154d255f07c5ce6aab6e09c3.jpg9c913000-06f8-475f-84f5-979b03f382f9.jpg.90807fa149759f01460a129950fdfd42.jpg

Nice, certainly an unusual colour, but that steering wheel has to go. Cosmic bumpers are a real plus point, I'd love a set. I'd have thought that an ashtray would be essential equipment?

Sad to say my heart this morning belongs to another, a beautiful original and unmolested early 1200 saloon for sale earlier in the week which for some reason I can't find this morning. Hopefully it's been sold.
