AidanT
Hi All I have an old Family Vice, one of my favorite tools, but its in need of some replacement bolt on Jaws. Its a big old heavy thing that's attached to my bench; Its a No: 5 and has 5 and a 1/4 inch jaws. For the life of me I can't find any replacement bolt on Jaws. Does anyone know where I can get hold of some? Thanks Aidan

AidanT
Thanks Pete I have asked the seller for more details - Would it be another option to get mine re-milled or is that not possible? Aidan
Pete Lewis
most are make from gauge plate ,, quite hard enough for most jobs and easy to cut and drill, they can be hardened but generally not needed we used to surface grind to tidy the ones in the apprentice school but that was 1962 Pete
AidanT
Pete What's the divfference between this and mild steel? Aidan
Pete Lewis
Gauge plate is stronger, used to make drill jigs and assembly fixtures its ease to harden but this wont be needed, can be cut with hacksaw and file Mild steel if its low spec its too soft and unless its a high carbon wont harden depends alot on just what you want the jaws to do and for how long Pete
AidanT
Finally finished making these this evening. As always had to buy all the right bits to do it but still a lot cheaper than buying them even if I could have got hold of the right ones! AidanT
Sorry as for the material - Purchased a length of Ground Flat Stock with similar dimensions. Bolts were a complete buggar to get out though - Anyone tried using heat to remove a bolt from a vice.... Aidan
