Red Devil
I couldn't help but notice this evening that when in second gear in my mk2 gt6 the box sounds more noisy than in any other gear. Is this normal or is it something I need to be worried about? Sorry as I feel this is a complete inexperience question but equally if I don't ask I'll never know! Pete Lewis
If its just whine then its not that unusual, if you ever strip the box then fit a new 2nd gear bush , if this is worn the tooth alignment suffers and whine is developed early boxes had a bronze bush later uprated to an iron one, both interchangeable Ic the s gear stick moves from drive to overun then time to check the mainshaft bearing circlip under the rear extensin housing if its 3rd then suspect mainshaft tip problems pete
Red Devil
Pete That's really helpful and it is a whine sound so hopefully ok. I'm not sure what you mean about drive to overrun? I have noticed that acceleration in first gear gets it to the point where when changing up to 2nd the car almost slows down initially as I release the clutch pedal as if I'm coming down through the gears rather going up, but maybe the noise change creates this perception. It does seem to go once I accelerate in 2nd. Maybe I'm working first gear too hard? To be honest with a six cylinder engine pushing such little weight (the car not me!) I could probably drive it almost exclusively in 4th and just flick the overdrive lever now and then!!!! Have to say it's a very different experience to my other old car which is a vw camper so 4 cylinders pushing a brick! Thanks Steve
Pete Lewis
Steve drive ...under power overrun .....power off coast ...... nearly free wheeling , How long you hang onto first is all down to diff ratios and how close the gearbox ratios are spread In thier day most of our cars 1st was more a emergency low for hill starts rather than roaring off the grid maybe less fun but just use 1st to get her rolling then let 2nd do the work its all down to preference, power , weight and ratios neither idea will cure a whine pete
