Gadgetman
I'm looking to upgrade my Vitesse 6 "HB" gearbox, I'm thinking about fitting a 2ltr "HC" box. Any issues with doing this? are the output flanges the same size? My HB box wines and with no 1st synchro it can be challenging at times! Pete Lewis
Its straight swap did this on my Vit6 also consider fitting a 2ltr diaphragm clutch , which is much better than the old spring pressure plate You need a 2ltr front nose cover and withdrawl bearing carrier. the bolt holes are the same but you need to drill a new dowel location, to centre the cover , this is not a best way but it worked fit a pipe oliveonnthe bolts and nip the cover up this may not be critcally centralised but it does equal out the bolt hole clearance You can drill the flywheel with a battery drill and tap in a new dowel not a purist method but needs must and it worked fine would pay you to source an overdrive box, we changed the diff for a 3.89 and whilst the engine was Mildly rorty it pulled like the clappers with that set up just some thoughts pete
Gadgetman
Thanks Pete, So an HC box with OD + 3.89 diff. I will keep a look out Guess I will need a shorter prop shaft + switch stalk and od gear box mount. Could be a winter project to go with the spare engine re-build..... There was a guy making good tunnel covers with access panels to check / top up the level. anyone got his details as I've lost them!
Pete Lewis
Dont know who that was, I just cut a b ig hole and ovsred it with a mud flap rubber Mine was on strombergs and had a 631 exhaust with some quiet tweeking and she gave most a good run for the money Dont over gear her , having crash on first was more emegency low than every day 1st, having 4 synchro made amazing difference and better ratio spread You need the inhibitor switch cam and brackets the od chassis mount plate and metalastic mount, speedo angle drive, pete Canley used to list a parts listing and a kit ,
68vitesse
An early Dolomite 1850 box is 3 rail and will fit a 2L Vitesse and has the J type overdrive. The bell housing is different. Regards Paul
Guest
Hello Gadgetman. I have a couple of spare bell housings laying about in the garage. One is from a Vitesse, the other from another Triumph either another Vitesse or Spitfire / Herald. Will post a couple a photos and hopefully a bell housing expert on the Forum (!!) will be able to correctly ID which is for which. if you are local to East Sussex it may be of interest for you. Perhaps you already have a suitable unit ?? Regards. Richard.
Pete Lewis
One advantagge of going dolly route you can get the box with the 18mm mainshaft spigot Must be 1850 or wont have the input shaft for a 6 cyl .....the alloy clutch hsg is much deeper on a 6 than a 4cly. like twice the depth, You would still need to modify up to a 2ltr /1850 diaphragm clutch 6pot has cut 10 splines the 1850 is I think rolled splines most 4 cyl are a cast hsg, all 6 are alloy well something like that pete pete
68vitesse
Dolomite 1850Three rail clutch is the same as the Vitesse 2L, the single rail just used a different friction disc. From memory. Regards Paul
daverclasper
Hi I have overdrive bitza fitted to Vitesse mk1 2Litre, that has the bigger engined Dolly shafts to accommodate J type OD. I think I have more details if you need them, eg same clutch as 2 litre Vitesse, apart from friction plate to fit the different Doly splines (TR7/bigger engined Dolly). Was rebuilt by Mike Papworth recently. He knows triumph gear boxes inside out. Dave
