What comes first. timing/fuel mixture

Hi folks

 

Something I've wondered for a while.

 

If setting up/tuning an older engine (some wear) with modern fuels, I set timing by advance till pinking then back a bit as factory settings prob nor relevant now.

 

I understand timing and mixture are related so one affects the other.

 

So what to do first as such.

 

Any advice great.

Chicken/egg, it's a condundrum.

 

You may have to do both, several times, each time approaching perfection.

Which one first?  Doesn't matter.
