Herald/Vitesse locking fuel cap?

They can be bought from the usual suppliers, but they are black plastic and, in my opinion don't look nice.

I was lucky enough to find an old one on the bay that was in good condition, I keep it in reserve in case I am somewhere where I would want to have a locked cap. The one on my Herald is an original non-locking one which I prefer.

I bought mine from Rimmers in Lincolnshire earlier this year.  It's not pretty but it fits.

Be wary of buying better looking items at fairs such as Stoneleigh.  I spotted a lovely new, chrome, lockable cap up there and was assured by the vendor it would fit.  Got it home and it didn't.  Obvious when you look at it, you need 3 tabs on the underside, not just 2.  To be fair, it was a stall of general motor accessories rather than a Triumph specialist and they did refund my money.

Ideally, a locking Waso petrol cap is the one to aim for and period acceptable.

Here is a link to one, but I do not recommended buying it as it has no key !! Just like selling a tea pot with no handle..................very useful !!

I have a Waso on my Vitesse and it is an excellent piece of kit which fits perfectly and tightly against the fuel spout; it came with one key but additional keys can be cut at locksmiths.

These units do come up on a regular basis, so will be worth keeping an eye out for one, certainly worth getting.

As an aside, it always amuses me when sellers (referring to the above link) say "easily obtainable or minimal cost" etc etc.....................if that is the case, why has the seller not done that then ?????????

Hope the above assists and good luck.

Regards.

Richard.

Richard, I've mentioned before I had a key for each door, the rear hatch and the locking petrol cap, seriously annoying fumbling for the right key! I took the barrels out the locks and reconfigured the tumblers so that one key fits all. Although I wasn't sure before I started, it turned out to be an easy job.

The door barrels have more tumblers than the hatch and petrol cap which are therefor shorter.  Looking at the Fleabay ad I think this cap also has a shorter barrel so that's what's needed, a key and a short barrel. Could even be that the tumblers in the existing barrel could be reconfigured to match an existing key.

Hello Doug, I recall that thread and a successful conclusion I believe ??

The Waso cap has an usual key blank and as such the tumblers therein will also be unusual. I remember trying to get a key blank from "The Lockman" many years ago (now sadly passed on) and he could not help !!

However with some research I managed to identify that a certain modern Jaguar (I think) key had an identical blank, so purchased one, got it cut and all was well.

I know what you mean about different keys, it is a pain - I have that situation with both classics, it looks as though "I'm going equipped" to nab my own car !!

Perhaps tumbler configuration (other than at the pub !!) may be a Twiddle Day opportunity. Looks as though you may have got yourself a job and I will be your first customer !!

Regards.

Richard.

Thanks Chris A.

Any recollection of who those suppliers are as currently I cannot even find a black one.

I agree they do not look nice but do not wish to leave the vehicle with a vunerable tank.

I assume that Vitesse is the same as Herald when it comes to petrol caps, so

Rimmers reference GSS193 out of stock at the moment though

James Paddock reference 600153 also out of stock at the moment.

As has been mentioned already the Herald/ Vitesse needs 3 prongs and is, I think, unique to these cars so be wary of 'fits triumph...' etc.

Good luck, it did take me a while to find a chrome one but  don't give up they are out there somewhere.

I got flat, round locking chrome ones for my Herald and Vitesse as i don`t like the look of the Waso ones.

From E bay as new old stock.

Just make sure they are vented as mine weren`t and you will break down when the pump tries to create a vacuum in the system.Easily fixed by making small hole in the seal.

Thanks for all the info, anyone that normally has them seem to be out of stock at the moment, hopefully they will re stock at some time.

Good news is that I have been in touch with The Fuel Cap company and they are close to producing one to fit the Herald / Vitesse . (Its mainly black sadly but at least one can secure the tank)

I will place the result on the Forum.

Hello.

Looking back through some records form 2015, I can confirm that the following key is an identical blank to that used by Waso for their locking fuel caps:

Jaguar XJS fuel cap blank key Part no RTC2182B

Posted for info and hope it is of assistance if required.

Thanks.

Richard.

Aidan,

Perhaps it's one of those caps that helps to get every last drop of fuel out of the tank with still another 10 miles before home !!

The seller has got some other useful stuff for sale - the twin SU's look decent & includes a manifold.

Regards.

Richard.

JBANGLIA have Fuel Caps for Herald/Vitesse. on Ebay , The cap is black .£28.00 Inc. delivery  and has 2 keys.

They come with a ring and allen key to modify the aperture to accept a two prong cap.

I have not been able to fit yet as the car is away being rebuilt, however the seller assures its been successfully fitted to a herald.
