Dave1963
Hi all, I am hoping to be a new owner very soon. I am looking at a Vitesse convertible, with a view to purchase by auction. I have looked at the car and its history and all seems ok, I would say its A2, so drivable, but needs TLC, which I going to give it. Any suggestions welcome! Cheers, Dave
JohnD
Vitesse convertable, very good choice, but also very popular so inflated prices, esp. at this time of year. Let us know when/if you have it. John
Dave1963
Just seen the advisory from the last MOT (2016) of blue smoke on acceration. Could be problematic?
Pete Lewis
could be just a breather problem, duff fuel, running too rich to worn out rings the skys the limit on prejudging this sort of visible fumes , has it got an dreaded external rocker oil feed fitted ..from the switch take off up the the back of the head ??? great for making smoke Pete
Dave1963
I only had 15 minutes with it Pete, so didnt have time for a really good look. The link is here and the pics are pretty accurate though. https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1004838. It is in need of some TLC, but I have seen reciepts for a plethora of work, including chassis welding/door skins/other repair panels etc. Its got brand new front brakes, including calipers and discs. The blue smoke is a worry, although it has also had a replacement engine in 2001, so not overly long ago. Maybe it hadn't been run for a while? mpbarrett
there estimate "Estimated Sale Price £3200 - 3750" seems a bit low! I would expect it to go for much more than that. Mike
Dave1963
I would expect the same. I was thinking £5-5.5 K? Maximum bid?
Clive
valuation was 9K, so usually around 2/3rds of that as a selling price. BUT people do get carried away a auctions, likewise sometime everybody is on holiday. You may get lucky!
dave.vitesse
The estimated price is low for a Mk2 Convertible and as a result the dealers will be bidding. I agree with Pete re the cause of the smoke. Yes £5 to 6K sounds about right, if the bodywork/chassis does not require any major work and the car is usable. Dave1963
I am down there that weekend anyway, so I will take a punt and not get carried away. As long as it isn't rings causing the smoke, I can sort it myself. Getting a bit long in the tooth for full engine strip downs! The body seemed in fair shape, most of the work seems to be inside the cabin, which is pretty tired and shabby.
Pete Lewis
smoke can even be as silly as overfilled dashpots the engines are not generally smokey ,, leaky yes ,, good for many a 100k without to much bother Pete

Also has thermostatted fan. And oil cooler! Behind the fan!!! 1

JohnD
BUT! After the external is removed, run the engine without the rocker cover, to see that there still is an oil supply to the rockers. Some masochists who fit YSoYD (Ye Spawnne of Ye Deville) will actually block the original oil passages. The original supply is not massive, but a metered supply from a flat on the rear camshaft journal. Just seeing a steady drip of oil from the rockers is sufficient, but it should be at all rockers. The supply is at the back, so see that the front ones seep oil. John

IF I win it at the auction, (I have set myself a budget and won't exceed that, as I have an idea of costs to get it how I would like), I will need a few ideas on how best to remove YSoYD and Oil cooler and any possible pitfalls that may incur. My expected use is more as a weekend tourer and not a thrashy race machine, so I will not be looking to hammer the engine at all. I will be looking more towards reliability than anything else (famous last words?). I have not owned a Triumph myself, but I have always wanted one after my folks having a 13/60 when I was a kid, so I am pretty green when it comes to the quirks of owning one, although I do vividly remember the old man cursing at length under his breath most weekends, when trying to find an elusive rattle or other niggly issue......I am sure that is where I learnt most of my Anglo Saxon vocabulary from! I have had old British cars in the past (Mini, Viva, Hunter, MGB GT) and I am more than familiar with the usual oil leaks and general maintenance issues, such as roadside repairs and having to keep a modest, yet fully functional collection of tools (usually a half inch spanner, a pair of pliers and a hammer), in order to remain mobile. No doubt, IF i do make the purchase, I will be on here asking some bloody stupid questions.... Regards Dave
Pete Lewis
the questions are not stupid,, some of the responses drift into debatable diatribe and wander off into sunset with nothing in common with the question what else would you expect ?? Jbc562l
Any chance of doing a compression test ? That would make me feel a bit happier/or not about that smoke ??
Pete Lewis
Guess there is not much chance with this being on auction a Comp test is always useful if theres a running problem The oribble after market musnt have oil feed is well documented to flood the valve stems guides and make smoke They are just not designed for that level of rocker zone lubrication overload and if fitted without a serious restrictor is a disaster waiting to happen Pete

Pete Pete, I would expect nothing less. I am a member of a few forums, one is for UK cycling which is at best caustic, another is a US based Gibson guitar site which is quite heavily moderated, so no banter allowed.... I guess the Yanks like to be censored, whilst us Brits tend to love to extract as much urine as possible? I bet I can still ask some bloody stupid questtions though....give me time..
