Pete Lewis
without a prefix the box could be any 3 rail (stamped off the top face ) pete
johny
Yes you're looking for a KF or WH followed by numbers but it could be over stamped with something else if its been reconditioned....
Joe c
Okay can’t source parts needed shorter output flange only one option shorten prop ok number stamped on gearbox K F 12530
johny
Havent got flange off original gearbox? Pity to shorten prop as it will be even more difficult to access the coupling bolts and short flanges are quite plentiful here. The number is from a US GT6 so looks good..... Joe c
Well spoke to usual suppliers no good canleys said about mk4 spitfire had j type overdrive and short output flange or shorten prop , look at original g/ box output flange but the internal diameter looks smaller it has piece weld on I think it call a oil throw which might have to be cut off , well if I knew were to get short flange from I would, and more room to fit back together but try today no luck, so my only solution at moment shorten prop were here
johny
Thinking about it you could be right about the prop because presumably this box is as it came from a US GT6 so they must have used a shorter prop there. Also I assumed the flanges were interchangeable but with Triumph you can't assume anything so it sounds like you need quite a specific item. I still think there must be one somewhere though.... johny
Have a look on eBay for 160286 flange. This is the part number for j type OD item but you would need to check with vendor that is actually shorter than what you already have.....
Ian Foster
Joe Have you spoken to Mike Papworth. Very knowledgeable and has a huge stache of parts. Ian

Pete Lewis
From joes picture its not looking like an extended coupling , seems pretty std one to me . Certainly cant get much shorter than the one fitted it only just covers the nut . Pete

Pete Lewis
Thats a picture saves a load of waffle Clear that you can see there is a good difference Pete
Joe c
Yes canleys said they use put on mk4 spotfire j type output flange run out of stock, If i cant find flange shorten prop Or new custom prop Now going to remeasure has figures dont add up, G/box 4inch longer Prop 43 1/2 Takes up 3 1/2 Difference 1/2 by all known facts
johny
Don't fancy that coupling on eBay then Joe? It definitely looks shorter than yours but I don't know by how much.....
Joe c
Went and remeasure diff to g/ box output flange 43 1/4 tightest point rimmers output flange 53mm I reckon that the one I got the one ebay 45mm 1.5 MM of play bit tight the one in picture of spitfire mk4 flange I reckon would work must have done various size flanges
johny
Canleys only list one flange for J types fitted to MK4 and 1500 Spitfires and it's 160286 same as sellers listing on eBay....
Joe c
I understanding what ur saying but how much movement should there be on propshaft I would get prop on But movement would be limited to 1.5 mm would that cause further problems
Pete Lewis
Dont think thats sufficient to allow you to engage the coupling spigots and will bottom out with engine and diff shift As all on rubbers theres a good deal of movement between them Why not cut 15mm off the telescope spline ???? Pete
johny
I think the sliding joint bottoms out on the prop before the tip of the spline shaft. Certainly doesn't look like you'd get 15 mm without taking some off the outer slider as well and the you'd have to retap some thread but suppose that's easier than prop shortening.....
