Colin Lindsay
It should (being a MK2 and hopefully unmolested, but a US Spec which may differ) have the smaller crank nut in the Spitfire range, I think about 38mm or 1 7/16ths The larger one is about 1 15/16ths. If you have an air impact wrench a socket on the nut will spin the engine if the plugs are removed. Similarly, it will be the best method of removing the nut in the first place. When I rebuilt a later model Spitfire ten or so years ago and needed to replace a broken pulley I tried all sorts of heat, huge spanners, penetrating oil, progressively longer breaker bars until eventually I was standing on a six-foot extension bar with the engine jammed using a huge screwdriver through the oil pump aperture. It bent the screwdriver into an 'S' shape but the nut didn't come off. I bought an impact wrench and the nut came off in 30 seconds.
Pete Lewis
yes we use a 20v Mac battery impact gun ( getting old now) and it works wonders on these nuts where jumping banging gorilla tactics fail pete
