Gentryman
Hi, I'm rebuilding a Kit car based on a Vitesse but other parts have been used, can anyone identify which calipers these are from the photos or tell me how I go about identifying them, thanks
thescrapman
They are Girling so probably original to Vitesse. Will be Tyoe 16. if the caliper bolts do not align they are type 14 calipers so off a Spitfire
Guest
Reckon the scrapman is spot-on, certainly Girling which you can see via the logo and physically appear Vitesse - it should show 16P at least. Hope that assists having both views ?? Regards. Richard.

On these type 16s you can see the 16P stamped around the mounting hole on the bottom right. The smaller type 12s read type 12 on the main body, as do type 14s - look just above the yellow paint on this old pair, it says 12SP. The lower one is a type 14, you can see how the body shape and chamber sizes differ between the two, but the mountings are the same.
Gentryman
Thank you, I will have a really good look tonight.
Gentryman
Thanks for your replies, I've looked at the calipers but it doesn't say 16P. What should the mounting hole centres be?
Casper
PDF from a previous thread Girling Type 16 Brakes.pdf
Nigel Clark
All Girling 16P are not the same. Those used on Triumphs have 3.75" spacing on the mounting holes. As I've heard, for some Ford applications, the mounting holes had 3.5" spacing. If your calipers have 3.75" spacing, they should fit Vitesse suspension mountings. Works Spitfires
They are 14's.
thescrapman
So it is Vitesse 1600 front suspension or Spitfire/Herald.
Pete Lewis
1600 had type 12s not 14s pete
KevinR
But 12s and 14s have the same mounting centres.
Colin Lindsay
The mountings in those look to be the smaller spacing of 12s or 14s - the reason I have the two joined in my photo is to show they have the same mountings, as opposed to the larger 16s - but the fluid chamber looks to be bigger, hence 14. Photos of the codes would confirm.
KevinR
If Dave Pearson has ID’d them as Type 14 then that’s good enough to convince me they are Type 14.
Colin Lindsay
That would do for me too, but it would be good to be able to point to the codes on the unit and show other members how to identify them, or even just what it all means.
