Gentryman
Hi, thanks for all the help I'm getting on this forum. I have bought all the parts to refurbish the rear brakes on my Vitesse kit car. It includes a tube of rubber grease which came with the cylinders fitting kit. There is no mention of rubber grease in the workshop manual. Do I just use it on the rubber dust covers? Thanks
Clive
I use it aside the rubber boot too, smear a bit around to keep corrosion at bay. I use brake fluid to assemble the pistons/seals. The red grease is safe to use with the seals. No other grease should ever be used.
Colin Lindsay
The red grease is to lubricate the new seals inside the pistons, plus as Clive says anywhere else that may dry out or corrode.
Clive
Ah, I should have added that if I was putting new seals in a cylinder/calliper etc and it was not going to be used immediately, I would assemble with red grease. But for immediate use I prefer brake fluid. Though on here that is a can of worms... (nobody mention the S word!)
Pete Lewis
in general.... brake fluid lubes the seal lips /inner bore red grease lubes the metal outer section of the piston pete
Gentryman
Thanks, The grease came with the dust seals, the rear cylinders are new, hence I thought I was supposed to pack some under the rear rubber seals.
