martyn wright
Hi Again! I can't find the code/part no for the Smith Heater Valve? The 13/60 has 511774 and Rimmer Bros, but on Rimmer it only states its for the Mk2 Vitesse? Is it the same for the 1600? Thanks Martyn
68vitesse
Think you might need 511774. Regards Paul
daverclasper
I think the Smiths are all the same valve Dave

Pete Lewis
you can strip and clean the smiths valve , used on all smiths heaters for H/V/S/GT6 there are inline cheaper cable valves you can fit with simple mods on places like merlin motor sport and carbuildersolutions always useful sites for bright ideas pete
dave.vitesse
I checked the parts manuals and 511774 is the right part number for all Vitesse. Double checking against what is actually there - The first of the pictures is the earlier 1600. The second one applies to late 1600 and all 2 Litres. Same valve as the makers stated. The 13/60 valve points in the opposite direction and if fitted the right way for the Vitesse the heater controls will work back to front i.e. pulling it out will turn the heat off. The 13/60 part number is 560611. Been there done it! Dave
68vitesse
A vague memory tells my the valve can be converted by removing the locking rivet and repositioning the front on the back. Regards Paul
Colin Lindsay
I think you're right; I was checking The Courier from November past where Crispin Allen had sent me details of the DG to Smiths conversion, and I'm almost sure that he mentioned in our correspondence that you can drill out the rivet and adjust the valve to a more suitable position. dave.vitesse
I modified one over 30 years ago! If I remember there is a handed part of the assembly where the cable clamp is. Though the lever can be changed to the other side the cable clamp is on the wrong side. You have to bolt on an extension piece of metal to the existing clamp fixing point and then use this as a new fixing point. It's only a short piece. Hope that makes sense, it's a long time since I did this and the memory is lacking the full detail. Dave
NonMember
I think Dave's right, from memory of trying to repair a roundtail Spitfire one with bits from a Mk3 GT6 one.
martyn wright
Hi All! The problem with mine is that the pipe is corroded and eaten away so a complete new Valve Unit is required! Many Thanks I will go for the 711774! Thanks Again!

Colin Lindsay
Any of the Febi valves for VW are a straight fit; one pipe on each end and a simple push/pull lever to attach the cable. As cheap as £8 new on eBay. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FEBI-Heater-Valve-VW-171819809E/333424739258?_trkparms=aid%3D555018%26algo%3DPL.SIM%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20131003132420%26meid%3D82b028789ada40069dc1c76179b04633%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D12%26mehot%3Dpf%26sd%3D233423198655%26itm%3D333424739258%26pmt%3D1%26noa%3D0%26pg%3D2047675&_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851
