ok then the cover will need the bolts doing up to pull it flat to the flywheel. Its always like that and has to be because otherwise there would be no clamping force on the friction plate. If your old cover isnt like that then theres something wrong with it (which may also explain the strange contact marks of the spring fingers) and Im surprised it wasnt slipping in use....

if you bolt the cover down its highly unlikey to allow the dowels as they are toleranced the bolt holes are open tolerance the chance of nipping it up and then being able to fit dowels

will be good luck with that , its wrong way round , the dowel locate  for a reason the bolts just hold it on

Lesson learnt. Dont be such a girl about it

It's called thinking out loud. I do it all the time. It helps.
