alan.gilbert_6384
Hi All, just trying to find out more about my spitfire, before i married it Does anyone recognise the other cars in these pictures ? Mine is the spitfire RAO338R, the others I think might be in the North West ( DEY468S, ELG579F )but I think the picture was taken circa 1998. I have attached some other pictures of shows the car has been too back in the 1990s and early 2000. Any body got any ideas who these people are ? Cheers
Colin Lindsay
RAO, a Carlisle number?
DerekS
If I remember correctly, "HH" was Carlisle, "AO" was the rest of Cumberland and "EO" Barrow-in-Furness.
Colin Lindsay
I used to pass through Carlisle all the time, would have stayed there for a night or two usually before hitting the ferry home, or going on northwards to Scotland. I always remember a lot of cars with the 'AO' registration, which is why this one struck a chord with me. Is the Stanwyx Tandoori still on the go on Scotland Road? That was the spot for the evening meal, and the French Bread Shop in the town centre, corner of Fisher Street, was always a breakfast stop - I know for certain it's no longer there. DerekS
I'm not that familiar with that end of Carlisle Colin, but according to google the Tandoori is still there and thriving. Not sure about the French bread shop though. How long have you had your car Alan? I'm sure I've seen it in various magazines over the years. (I have one the same.) alan.gilbert_6384
Hi Derek, I brought it 12 months ago from Lancaster, it now resides much closer to it's birth place, not far from Coventry. Attached a picture of it parked next to another great bit of great British engineering, interesting designed by Roy Chadwick, who as designed the Lancaster bomber just 8 years before. Just shows what we can do when want to eh. On that note compare the very latest 100 million plus plane (made in the US )we have the Lockheed Martin F35 B, to Concorde. Which goes faster ? Which goes higher ? Which has the longest range ? Which has the longest operational hours between down time service ? Which carries 130 people ? Just a thought Have you got some pictures of yours ? DerekS
Alan, being a "local" car here, I'm sure that yours has featured in a number of magazines over the years, Classic Car Weekly and/or Practical Classics. Perhaps the Courier?
alan.gilbert_6384
Very nice car, I see you have an exhaust that does not wake the gods. is it a standard one ? Mine is the twin thingy louder than Concorde on take off Any idea how to find out if its been in those mags ?
DerekS
I'm sorry for coming with half a crack Alan, I've had a look through the Spitfire-related magazines I've kept but can't find anything. Definitely remember seeing your car though! Can anyone else help? The exhaust is a standard pattern stain steel. The car had an expensive twin "wheelbarrow" set up on it when I bought it... by the time I'd driven the 300+ miles home after picking it up I'd had enough, not for me. That's a brilliant photo of yours!!!
alan.gilbert_6384
Cheers Derek, thanks for looking for me. Yes I think mine is the weelbarrow type as well, may be some ear defenders are required , on the plus side maybe they can keep my ears warm as well😂
DerekS
Alan, I've been trawling through some old magazines in preparation to get rid of them and have found this. It's from May 2009 and I'm wondering if you are interested still? ( I remember looking for this quite a while ago!) Derek.
