Yep. This is not going to be over anytime soon. And assuming the boffins have got their models reasonably correct, that is the sort of timescales until infection levels fall to low levels. It could be faster with no limitations on social interactions, but that would stress the NHS.

Have the French not been open about how they expect this to pan out? please don't tell me they reckon shutdown for 2 weeks and then all will be OK??? At least Boris is being pretty straight about this.

Singapore having zero cases is not an end to it from them. It just means that new cases will arrive , and spread, then they will quarantine etc. And that will continue until a reliable vaccine is available.

It is a case of take it step by step, if in 2 weeks the measures need to be extended or made stricter they will be. nobody thinks the initial 2 weeks will be enough. We tend to be looking at Italy as they are 8 to 10 days ahead of us (nearly 700 deaths just for yesterday).

Nice has a curfew in place now between 11 pm and 5 am except for those who need to be out for work. The fine for being out without a justification/valid reason is 135 euros or even arrest. There is a crime of putting a third persons life at risk with a maximum fine of 15000 euros and/or 1 year sentance. A few people have been taken into custody but so far no actual charges. So you see how serious it is being taken even if a few people are still ignoring the fact that it exists.

Whether it is better to clamp down as done by Europe and China for example or let it run its course, which was discussed here, and let 70 to 75% of the population catch it before it fades away I have no idea - I leave that to those who should know.

For sure it is going to get a lot worse before it gets better. Even the Eurovision song contest has been cancelled so it must be bad 🤢

Personally I fill in my little form when I need to go shopping or to the pharmacy and go in the Triumph. Well I can usually think of something I need to buy to give me the reason to go out. I do avoid mixing with people as much as possible.

Requested, yes, but not directed. Besides, does anybody believe we can all stay that isolated for the next 10-12months?  Humans need interaction (well, most of us do) so a cycle ride, walk with friends etc is a brilliant way of doing just that and improving our chances of keeping  sane. And a bit healthy.

The reality is we NEED the virus to spread at a steady rate, faster the better UP TO the threshold that the NHS can cope. If we suddenly drop to zero new cases (like china is claiming) then there will be an immediate second wave when people start to mix again. Boris's models for the spread rely on varying levels of interaction

So yes, we need the young and healthy to spread it amongst themselves, but keep away from the vulnerable. The sooner large numbers of people have had the virus and recovered, the sooner the world will start to return to normality and the shorter the time for the world economy to recover, which is in all our interests.

Looks like Boris has changed his view since yesterday, pubs etc in Britain now closed. He accepted his scientists opinion that his go it alone strategy wasn't the right one. It now seems everyone is working along the same lines. Not sure about Boris's mentor Donald - he at least realises it isn't fake news and is a menace.

"We're doomed, we're all doomed" If you are old enough to have seen this series when it first went out then you are! 😱

I thought Boris had requested that you all stayed at home unless it was vital to go out? In your case a justified reason, but cyclists? No doubt they weren't even respecting a safe distance between them to reduce the risk of contamination.

Funnily enough, no - they were parked in large numbers at the canal-side cafe in the village where waiters were bringing them out takeaway coffees to outside tables, which I thought sort of negated the whole idea of closed cafes and stay-at-home isolation.

The Autoparts branch I went to made me wash my hands at the door with their hand sanitiser, refrain from picking up anything that I wasn't buying, and pay by contactless.

As a real downer I had a doomsday briefing this morning and what happens in those 10 - 12 months may be a lot worse than anyone expects.

I keep looking at the Motorhome, Parked on the driveway with the thought that It has it`s own "facilities" Toilet, hot water for hand-washing even cooking? etc; and thinking it might be the better tool, if/when I need to shop?. I know some (virtually) deserted places with beach access up here, and the dog would benefit from the exercise, combining the 2 could be a "goer". Mobile "social distancing"?. My thought is that "4 wall syndrome" could become as big an issue in a few weeks, especially for those in the 70+ category who are otherwise fit, and without the "underlying" medical issues. We have no family within 250 Miles, so have to do our own shopping. The nitrile gloves I got for working in the garage I can see being used elsewhere too!. Had to get some Fuel for the car last week, used the pay at pump facility for probably the first time!

No sign of the August "Triumph weekend" being abandoned as Yet?.

The village is currently full of motorcyclists - Sunday morning as usual - plus pedal cyclists on the tow paths even though walkers and ramblers have been asked to stay away and not congregate, so it'll take a bit of time before everyone starts to see sense in keeping a distance - and then, what?

I'm wondering if taking the GT6 out on the road over the coming weeks, on my own, not stopping and not talking to a soul would still be socially acceptable?

I would say it is, as it is what I would want to carry on doing, however I'm not sure Monsieur Le Gendarme would agree.

Maybe you need to make it compulsory to stay indoors with fines like here - 135Euros first offence a second within 15 days and it goes up to 1500, 3 in 30 days and it becomes a criminal offence upto 3750 Euros and 6 month sentence.

Colin,

Unless you breakdown and have to summon assistance, but hey! That’s not going to happen in a Triumph, is it?

My son-in-law phoned his mother in that other part of Ireland, she’s off to play golf with friends. Golf is good for keeping the virus away apparently.

Full blown family row!

I think most of that other half of Ireland is up in our half!! When the schools closed, before ours did, they all came up here as if on holiday... and bought up all our toilet rolls. They won't be invited back if that's the way they get on.

Vic Aus just gone into full lockdown  except essential services (Vic was 230 reported cases jumped by 59 yesterday, Vic's around 20% of Aus cases), exceptions exclude petrol stations, supermarkets, off license's still open as are restaurants/cafe's but take away, but finally the powers have shut the Casino & AFL(Aus Rules Football, ) fully stopped after first round till end of May, which was no spectators players only.

There's talk of inter suburb isolation (worst affected areas). Son works for Michelin now working from home, his free annual allowance of my 4 X type free tyres have been delivered to fitter, scheduled to fit today, but too risky for me (75) so he'll p/u and store!

Like Colin I was thinking of taking the Dolly Sprint a run and not stopping anywhere, ie no contact = no risk, but I think I caught the Vic Premier saying the Police could stop cars to check they had just cause to be travelling Ooh! Unlike your classic car free rego we have a >25yr old car Club Permit scheme (red plate eg 74000H, or CH444) with 45 or 90 day social usage at around $80 for 45 days (full rego around $750/a), its a permit to use socially, not rego, & each daily usage  requires a log book entry, So you can imagine what would happen if I took a red CP number plated classic out, Mr Plod is going to pounce, Aah shit, no fines yet tho!

I must state we are abiding by the voluntary lockdown, no mixing even with immediate family!

When I told my daughter yesterday I was thinking of taking the Dolly a run she reminded me of one of my two school reports that I've kept from a very prestigious private school here in Melb, from when I was 15/16, the Headmasters quote "I know rules were made to be broken, BUT not with the frequency that Peter breaks them!" he knew my parents very well hence the plain language, interestingly when we returned to England in 1962 (age 16) he wrote to me every year until I was 21 asking how I was getting on, what I was doing & was happy (maybe surprised) when I got my Civil Eng degree.

A grumpy Peter T

Melb Aus.

Sadly, I think it's just not right to expect people to stay at home then for me to go out gallivanting around the empty roads... if I do it then others may and we're back to square one. Not fair, but then that's life. I wish someone would tell the cyclists, tho... over 100 of them in the village at present, clustered round the Tea Rooms for takeaway coffee.
