Yellow spitfire , i have a plan

Recommended Posts

Introduce a new project. It will be inca yellow and built in the spirit of B.L.

Yes a parts bin special, the theory is I have enough parts laying about to build a spitfire. Just acquired a body ,bonnet and a few other bits I knew I was missing.

Will make a start as soon as the 2500s is painted

Nice US style bonnet.. What's with the square hole in the middle?!

Its from some ones failed restoration, they according to the person that I bought it from were going to fit a mx5 engine. Apart from this hole and the front beam behind the nose cone is very solid . I will weld this hole, the side indicator holes and the support beam (which I have an original repair section!). The tub requires the drivers side sill, both inner lower a posts (bit by your feet) and some minor holes. Again I have these panels already.

That's not bad really all-told on a project like that

Now the garage is clear of s parts I was thinking of making a start on the yellow spitfire. I have thought of a plan!🤔.

Get my lowered trestles IMG_20200531_174253.thumb.jpg.f9cc237fe41f292efbf5fcedeccd7998.jpg

Then put the chassis onIMG_20200531_174343.thumb.jpg.d8c70cd6adb5b1a4bba023c9c3aa4176.jpg

Then place the body and bonnet and doors all on bolted. Do all the welding , making sure the panel gaps line up. Take apart, finish any welding I could not get too. Then paint chassis, body and bonnet . Assemble . Any thoughts?

Sounds very feasible. As long as the body parts fit when being welded, then removing them afterwards shouldn't throw anything out of kilter.

This is the last one I did, which, because of the sheer amount of work it took, and the delays it caused in my own Herald and GT6 jobs, was the LAST one... :).. but it's a great colour for the Spitfire, probably my favourite.

I do love inca, my nan had a inca tr7 . I had a spitfire in it but sold before doing it. I did do a gt6 in incaPhoto0891.thumb.jpg.a4f6d1746044b0fef583b9b050683a92.jpg that was on its first MOT after getting on the road.

Gathered up the panels, there are a few little bits I still have in the barn but from the top of my head I still need drivers sill, drivers windscreen drip panel, drivers a panel repair. Anyway lots of pics follow, if there's something you see let us know. If you have a part I'm up for a swap (once we are allowed!).

Since you have the doors stripped can you advise me whether you can get to the plates Inside the door which hold the hinges on ,as I want to get mine out and weld some captive nuts on the back. Do you think I would have to take out the Glass on door guys to get to them?

Slow progress today, the holes seem to be getting bigger and the bonnet cross support front bit was a reel pig to remove. Got the front support ready for welding. Got some sections cut for the holes. Got an inner support for the right sill ready.

Front bonnet support in .IMG_20200610_112931.thumb.jpg.d484f1a868a989a3e5386ba5c5df9e92.jpg

Started the right sill repair, put some inner strength prior to the outer sill and inner a post repair (at least there is something to weld to now) . Funds don't allow to buy repair sections. So am making what I need from bits I have left and sheet steel. I always said I had enough bits to build a spitfire, well almost!IMG_20200610_113107.thumb.jpg.27d21993b8e277cd32f54ae26c02b5a2.jpgIMG_20200610_113118.thumb.jpg.d01541db33296d864084b577dab54f74.jpg

Looking better well done, took the plates out of my door and had some weld nuts added.  Added some brackets to the A Post to stop the  flex, hoping it will work

They look like what's on the door, never seen it done on the bulkhead. Didn't realize you had flex there, it should definitely stop that. I've had door drop before but that's been due to worn hinges.

Did not realize when I started this project how close the parallels to B.L. would be. Budget very restricted due to other commitments. Its come to a critical stage with the sill repair. Normally I would buy at least an outer sill and replace. On this I was getting some sheet folded and was going to fabricate the rest, it looks like the place folding the metal for me is going to let me down. Come to the rescue a mate at work has offered to buy the car, under a deal I get it done, painted and MOT ed. He will help out and supply the missing bits required to complete (usual worn out bits) I already have most bits. I do not make any money under this deal, probably lose some but no more out lay.

If this goes through there will be changes, under my management it was to be yellow, so the chassis would have been yellow. Under the takeover the chassis will be black. The body red. I still get to do the bits I enjoy with help but specification will no longer be under my control. If it does not go through I am able to finish the welding and clean-up and give it an epoxy prime. It will then have to wait. Otherwise its sell the puma spit or the 2500s.

You mean - the workforce is out on strike?? :)

I think my TR7 thread was the same - I got fed up with it, it was holding me back on other jobs, and now it's gone I can breath a huge sigh of relief and work on the Heralds again. I didn't make any money either, but learned a lot of new things.

No, the financial side, the workforce is still there. Every day's a school day.
