Yellow spitfire , i have a plan

Recommended Posts

More spraying today . Gray Scotch wipe over the body and a few bits 600 grade. Two coats over the body and the other bits sprayed. Apart from a bug on the wing and a small run by the front of the passinger sill its come up well. Did have a disaster, my 1.3 gun decided to start dripping over the boot lid on the first pass! Had to strip out and put the bits in my 1.8 gun. Funny but it sprayed much better from this gun with the 1.3 needle and cup on it! I used a medium hardener due to the heat today, it did help it flow out better.

Superb choice of colour Mathew, one of my all time favourites :) Nice spray job as well.

Tony.

Not bad but alot of practice, still spot bits! Just going over a few bits today, but not going mad. The worst was the drips on the boot lid, 600 rub down and another couple of coats.

just shows what can be achieved with a  hvlp spray system   the lack of overspray and high coverage

wins .  more should try it

Almost pete, lvlp gun with a 1.3 tip. You don't need as much volume as a hvlp. Guns at the 70 pound mark .

Burisch gtr500 gun. Solvent based 2k. I live at an end of the village with the nearest house 20 metres away. With the fan blowing away down the garden 220 meters long and a field  after that, so no worries about fumes covering anyone. At least 4 coats and some 5 top coats, so plenty to be able to cut back and polish. Will leave for about a month now before cutting back.

Great job.

Thanks, been working on a special project for the puma spitfire today in a space behind the yellow spitfire, every time i go past it brings a smile. Have to resist putting it back together until I've refinished it.

Been doing the refinishing but have been slowed down by a broken compressor (see other thread).

So onto the trim bits . Fed up with hanging up the bars i decided to make a frame to take them.

I have done many of these bits of trim in the past and ironically after i have made a frame to spray them i probably won't do any more!

Well i have been flatting back the bodywork and even with four coats in a couple of places it started to go a bit thin. So a couple more coats put on.

Now i have managed to get the vertical like glass from the gun (iwata wb400 classic 1.3 tip) but still orange peel on the boot lid! Can some of you experienced sprayers out there tell me what I'm getting wrong on the flat!

Sprayed when laying in the closed position!

Mat, was the boot lid sprayed with the same batch of paint as the verticals?

Orange peel can be down to paint being too thick, or potentially air pressure being too low, so that you’re not putting enough paint down to keep the surface ‘wet’ enough for the paint to flow.

That’s about the limit of the knowledge that I can offer.

Cheers, all sprayed at the same time, mixed the paint in a 1.4 litre pot as one batch. No change in pressure running 2bar with fan fully open , air full open. This is a new gun and it throws alot of paint down very fine. Mix was 2:1 with just under 10% thinners. The only really bad bit is below the lock , in a line 3/4 along the length. I panel wiped the night before and tack raged just before spraying. Maybe a little contamination in this area and i should have panel wiped just before again? But i don't know.

Cut with 3m cutting compound.

Got some 3m polish coming but that won't go on for at least a month. Its not perfect and if i 2000 grade rubbed it down with a DA I could get a few more dimples out. The only risk is cutting through and with only 200ml of paint left I can live with it. I have an idea how to avoid this next time, the paint has flowed out better on the verticals and the way the boot lid went when i sprayed must of had some contaminate on there, so double panel wipe next time.

Anyway its bolt everything back on now!

Bit of an all over day today. Lots of sorting. I now know i need front lights and side lights only have one headlight bowl! And no fixings. The anti roll bar is now on and the best of the stearing racks. I have two new track rod ends but am missing the nut from one and can't find a nut to fit.

re track rod ends, try a metric nut I posted here a while ago re some greaseable TRE I had purchased ex UK where the taper joint bolt thread was metric, but the steering rod end was std UNF, the comment was manufacturers had probably standardised the ball/socket and taper manufacture and were using a metric thread on the taper joint thread.

Yes, its a metric but fine thread. Unf have white nyloc and the metric blue. I have the standard metric nyloc or nut but the thread is too course to screw on! Typical when you have a draw full on new unf nyloc nuts you need just one fine metric .

Yes I had to go to my regular bolt bar to get the fine thread 1mm metric lock nuts, got 1/2doz each lock and std nuts as just as cheap min purchase was $10, all in the metric jar which I don't use often..

You just reminded me, when i get home to check the spare top ball joint, what size nut is on that? One day i will get round to finding the right size for it or steal from the then worn out other ball joint ! Will probably just order another track rod end and put it in the spares rack. Got to put some heat on the old ones, for some reason they seem to be reluctant to release. Might do a bit today but work tonight for the next four.
