Sparky_Spit
Can someone please remove my very large profile picture, which I seem to have added and cannot remove despite trying several times. Thanks in anticipation....

Colin Lindsay
You mean the signature picture? Go to your name at the top right of the page, then drop to account settings, then choose signature. You should be able to remove it.
Sparky_Spit
Sorry yes, Signature. I've tried that Colin and it does not work for me. The picture is deleted when you do what you say above but re-appears once you look at the forum again. If I look again at the Signature settings the delete option is not there. It re-appears if you leave the site and then come back again, but it still goes through the same process again. And again and again. Pete - I can delete each post okay, but any new post still has the large signature picture, even though I chose a small version.

Go to your albums and see if it's there, then delete the actual photo, or else remove it from wherever it's stored. I had thought that if you change your signature to anything other than the photo, then this changes all the posts. Try a line of text instead, save and see how that goes. Sparky_Spit
Yes you are right... I didn't think of clicking inside the photo. Sorted now thanks, evidenced (hopefully) by this post having no enormous picture at the bottom. Thanks!
Sparky_Spit
I have found out what is causing the issue for me above; it seems to be the use of MS Edge browser. Using Chrome it works fine. Lesson learnt.
NonMember
Ha! I knew I was right to remove it as soon as Microsoft forced it on me. On Windows 7, at least a year beyond its end of support, when no service packs are being released... it STILL automatically installed Edge without asking. Badwolf
Win10 still does. Sick of getting rid of it.. don't start me off again about their ******* updates!!!
Colin Lindsay
It even appears on my Mac, asking if I want to install it, despite having NO Microsoft programmes on the computer. How do they do that?

Badwolf
It's a pity that there is no operating system that I know of that can be swapped for MS that doesn't cause a lot of problems. I know that there is Linux but can I really be bothered or is it simpler to keep fighting off Microsoft trying the invade my life with cr*p that I don't want taking up computer space they don't deserve. Trouble is I don't know what is really required to run certain other programmes otherwise I would just uninstall all the MS products that I don't and won't use from internet explorer onward. I don't want to Social Media, sync all my devices, load stuff to the cloud, or even Tick Tak (I know, not am MS product) but I just wish that MS would load the basic Windows operating system and THEN give the option to load what the user wants.... and pigs might fly... rant over .. I said not to get me started!!!
Pete Lewis
when my last laptop had a crash Linux was installed I liked its simplicity but the version i had became un supported and my guru said lets stick wit MS , not sure that was a good move the last months updates seem to need multiple clicks to open desktop icons or the hard drive is on strike ...its only 6month old all in one HP thingy too many options you dont need , even the washing MC has a baby wash program we dont have a baby to test it . so now we need a got me going posting page Pete
alan.gilbert_6384
Hi Pete, if you liked Linux then you will get on well with a Mac, as it’s the basis for the Mac OS.
Colin Lindsay
I have always been fond of Apple Mac since my first 'proper' computer, a 603e Performa back in the mid-90s. I use a PC for simple programmes like photo editing that I can't get for the Mac, but otherwise stick to Apple. Recently they've jumped on the bandwagon, slowing older Macs down deliberately in the hope that people will buy a new 'faster' version, and releasing updated versions of their Operating System which are all-singing, all-dancing and then you find that nothing works with them any more. I'm keeping one Mac in an old OS so that many things, including my iPods and music software, will continue to work, rather than having to shell out on the 2020 versions of both hardware and software in order to have things work as before. Can you imagine Triumph selling you a car, then bringing out fuel that the car won't use, making you upgrade to a different engine, then making that engine obsolete in a year or two so that the keys won't work, and the radio won't work... but we put up with it on computers. Mad4classics
Having had to use MS at work, I've always stuck with Ubuntu Linux at home. The only thing I can't do is connect the SatNav to get updates, but heyho, I've got a road atlas and a navigator. David
Anglefire
I actually like the new version of Edge. Chrome has got too intrusive for my liking. I use Ubuntu as well for my website - but that's as a server so all command line stuff and no pretty desktop I'm not very good at it still, but learning slowly. Hi Colin, I work for a certain OEM (based at Gaydon) technical specialist, and your absolutely right. The lengths we have to go to with electrical systems are unbelievable. We have to effectively firewall separate systems to ensure that they function even when the rest of car systems shut down (try getting a PC to do that). We have to buy life time stocks of certain chips sets even before the cars JOB1 date, as the chips set industry is all about the next greatest thing rather than sustainable manufacturing ( typical chipset run is just 18 months) longest I’ve known was 36 months and that was because a certain Chinese government body ordered it). Now we have OTA in the back ground which is a god send for us and our customers.

No, the basis for MacOS was NetBSD, not Linux. Granted they're both Unix-like but they're not the same thing at all. Besides, nobody ever sees the underlying bits of MacOS because their desktop (which has nothing at all to do with Linux) hides it all. I'm not saying Pete won't like MacOS - there's a lot that's very nice about it. SWMBO moved over to Mac when Win10 on a Lenovo laptop became completely unusable, and wouldn't ever go back. I use Linux in various forms (Gentoo on this box) because I like the choice and the option of simplicity.
