David McHugh Posted June 19, 2015 Report Posted June 19, 2015 Hi Guys, does anyone know of a technique for fitting new piston rings that will reduce the likely hood of breaking them. Thank you in advance David...
Clive Posted June 19, 2015 Report Posted June 19, 2015 Never had a problem using my thumbs and gently spreading the rings. Only open them up enough to get over the piston though.
david lewis Posted June 19, 2015 Report Posted June 19, 2015 I used to use a few feeler gauges spread around the piston .slide the rings over the gauges and when they are opposit their slots pull out them out. Take your time and you should have no problem Good luck.
Pete Lewis Posted June 19, 2015 Report Posted June 19, 2015 And if you dont have a ring compressor use a roll of a smooth side bean tin, and use a large hose clip to compress the can and close the rings into the piston grooves, dont over tighten or you wont tap the piston down into the bore pete
