Hi I have a problem with my starter motor on my triumph spitfire 1500 so I have ordered a new barrel and pinion set but was looking online and apparently you need a special clamp to compress the main spring in order to take off the little circlip.so my question is where would you get one or is there another way to compress the spring without the tool.thanks for looking regards Paul

have a look on youtube ??

Have a look on eBay. You need a Bendix gear compressor, I bought this one for £1 a few years back and it's like a small suspension spring compressor. If you're trying to compress the spring any other way bear in mind you need to clamp at least two sides and it's quite strong, so take care.

I managed to compress the spring with two molegrips once, but it wouldn't have passed a Health and Safety inspection.  From what I remember, I had to keep releasing one side then the other, tightening the grips each time.

That new one is a bargain... You could re sell it for that when you finished with it :)

I was just about to say: Ssssshhhhhh!, someone might buy it! - but someone has, hopefully Paul himself...
