tim howell Posted September 23, 2020 Report Posted September 23, 2020 This gearchange fault occurrs about 50% of the time. if i use max rpm say 5000 plus ,when changing into 3rd it can be impossible to engage the gear, its as though the gear has been removed from the gearbox only once the car has slowed down can the gear be found. drive it gently and its always there ..... it does occasionaly crunch the gears 2nd to3rd 3rd to 4th when driven , and on downward changes but not always . any advice would be most helpful tia
thescrapman Posted September 24, 2020 Report Posted September 24, 2020 Sounds like you have 1 or more of the standard Triumph gearbox problems. dragging clutch maybe? Have you also checked the crank thrust washers? gearbox could be failed 3rd gear circlip and/ or worn synchro rings. how are the gear changes if you double declutch?
johny Posted September 24, 2020 Report Posted September 24, 2020 I wonder also what the change linkage is like - is the lever movement relatively positive and accurate or floppy and arbitary? If not good this is the easiest part to overhaul so worth doing first....
Pete Lewis Posted September 24, 2020 Report Posted September 24, 2020 all synchro relies on a clearing clutch ,the baulk rings have a hard job as they have to spin the clutch disc up or down to the sync'd rpm any drag baulks a change also do check what state the remote bushes are in as this may be a selection mechanical block all colins clues are valid much can be adrift /worn out on these boxes now a broken circlip will cause much of what you have a clue the gear stick will shift about on drive/overun Pete
Mjit Posted September 24, 2020 Report Posted September 24, 2020 Does it make any difference if you double de-clutch, so clutch down/in to neutral/clutch up, clutch down/in to 3rd/clutch up?
tim howell Posted September 28, 2020 Author Report Posted September 28, 2020 Thankyou all for your advice on my gearbox problems . It does appear i have more than one issue to deal with, cheers tim
Pete Lewis Posted September 30, 2020 Report Posted September 30, 2020 do the cheap first start with bleed the clutch slave , then a look at the remote rod bushes then let us know what you find if anything Pete
