PeterH Posted October 10, 2020 Report Posted October 10, 2020 Does anyone know how heavy a Spitfire Mk3 Triumph metal hardtop is? Mine is somewhat buried at the back of the garage and I've been wondering about suspending it from the garage ceiling. I might actually get round to fitting it if it was more accessible.
Colin Lindsay Posted October 10, 2020 Report Posted October 10, 2020 I hung an entire Herald Estate roof from the ceiling in my last garage; four large screw-in hooks, and blue nylon cord. It lasted more than a few years so once up, it stayed up! I didn't risk pulling it up into place so had a mate hold it tight to the rafters then tied the ropes in place. It was cushioned with a few of those foam pipe covers, you know the tubes for frost protection, across the top where it was close to the rafters and on the edges where the ropes were.
PeterH Posted October 10, 2020 Author Report Posted October 10, 2020 Amazon sell a system for suspending canoes, 125 lb capacity. (56.6 kg) I would think the hardtop is a bit less than that - 2 person easy lift.
Pete Lewis Posted October 10, 2020 Report Posted October 10, 2020 canoe winch......turn the hard top into a coracle ,,dual purpose i got a electric winch to get duxford stuff up in the loft without having to carry it up the ladder but never used it anyone interested ??? bit like this Pete
Colin Lindsay Posted October 10, 2020 Report Posted October 10, 2020 If my knees get any worse I'll need one to get ME up into the spares loft...
Adrian Cooper Posted October 10, 2020 Report Posted October 10, 2020 Good evening Peter, My hardtop is suspended from my garage rafters and I'm sure it weighs less than 125lbs as I can carry and fit it to the car on my own. Adrian

I don't have ready access to any of my photos just now to illustrate the system I built - probably rather over-engineered - of a cradle for the hardtop permanently attached to the winch ropes. The idea is you drive the car in under it, lower the cradle onto the hardtop, clip it on, then winch the hardtop up. I've not actually tried the reverse operation yet - perhaps I should. 🤔
Peter Truman Posted October 10, 2020 Report Posted October 10, 2020 one of our members here in Vic has a Stag and he has a business installing hospital patient lifting hoists over each bed, ie anchoring into the ceiling structure and having forward/back and left/right traversing. Obviously he has acquired one of these well engineered units and used it with it's rails to install and remove his Stags roof. One advantage is he doesn't have to park the Stag in exactly the same spot every time as the winch can traverse.
PeterH Posted October 11, 2020 Author Report Posted October 11, 2020 I'll dig my hartop out and weigh it. It also needs a bit of work i.e. new headlining. If the canoe device is suitable I'll install it above the car so the top can be lowered straight down. I will have to move a strip light that's on the ceiling, but nothing is ever straight forward. The hard top is against the back wall with a sawbench and router table in front plus sundry other bits of junk. Nice job if we get locked down again !
Colin Lindsay Posted October 11, 2020 Report Posted October 11, 2020 These two hooks are for my Herald hardtop; okay so it's fibreglass so a lot lighter than metal but still bulky. Problem is, I can't work out how to get it up there... 1
Ian Faulds Posted October 11, 2020 Report Posted October 11, 2020 Put a ladder up the wall, then from your 4 post lift ,bridge another ladder or plank of wood across to the ladder on the wall. Hold the roof on your head and walk across bridge. Simple 🤔😂
Pete Lewis Posted October 11, 2020 Report Posted October 11, 2020 Ian you forgot to add wear a blind fold Pete
martyn wright Posted October 11, 2020 Report Posted October 11, 2020 Hi You can buy a Hand Winch on Ebay for around £16.00?? or if you are Posh an electric one? Cheers Martyn
PeterH Posted October 11, 2020 Author Report Posted October 11, 2020 This is the one I'm looking at (£26.00) Hooks are designed with a rubber coating to protect from scratches Easy to install and easy to use ROBUST ENGINEERING - New improved STRAPS eliminate the fragile hooks that plague cheaper hoists, and allow you to lift heavy products, up to 125lb. Capacity. This is the kayak hoist that all the other are trying to copy. For Ceilings up to 12ft. Safe locking mechanism prevents accidental release
martyn wright Posted October 11, 2020 Report Posted October 11, 2020 Yep! I have both! one for a Canoe and one for a Bicycle!
Badwolf Posted October 11, 2020 Report Posted October 11, 2020 PeterH - That is just what I was thinking about for mine (if I ever get it finished). Do you have a link for that particular model. I was thinking about an old fashioned laundry rack, but the fittings on those are very poor.
Badwolf Posted October 11, 2020 Report Posted October 11, 2020 OK. Found one for about £18.00. Looks like it might be similar. Also found this link of Pete L using one..... https://www.amazon.co.uk/Elikliv-Attachment-Exerciser-Equipment-Accessories/dp/B088PQ1X8G/ref=sr_1_49_sspa?dchild=1&keywords=canoe+hoist&qid=1602432255&sr=8-49-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEySkxRWk1ETkkyNk1HJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMTI5OTU5MVBTQUo5MlgyUzFBSyZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwNjMzNTg0Mk8zTlFSR1I4N1VDRSZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX2F0Zl9uZXh0JmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==

Just remember two things: what it's supporting, and who might be walking under it. (Or what you might have parked under it, too!) Then ask yourself if you really want the cheapest?

Badwolf Posted October 11, 2020 Report Posted October 11, 2020 Not looking for the cheapest but that was the first that I came across. Problem is, as ever, what is the difference between them for the price or are they all the same unit sold by different sellers for different prices?
Pete Lewis Posted October 11, 2020 Report Posted October 11, 2020 i would never get the wife in it Pete
