Peter Truman
I have a couple of rebuilt bearing housings and good flanges, also spare drive shafts, but I haven't assembled them as I'm worried about the axle's original rotation ie which side RH or LH were they fitted on their original fitment, and installing them willy nilly ie drivers to passenger side could prematurely cause a shaft failure? Pete Lewis
16 hours ago, Peter Truman said: which side RH or LH were they fitted it does seem wise to be cautious but on a bare shaft (no backing plate ) there is no easy way to find if its a Left or a Right i wonder if you can get them normalised as its fairly well known torsion memory unwound can make for a failure when we tested out truck half shafts the drive frequency was vastly longer than the reversed ( this took about 3 weeks of continuous cycles ) Pete
wimpus
I've build the shaft up more. In the next few weeks I will be putting them on Fox probably due to a noise I have. And maybe change the diff once again to..
wimpus
And we did some more work on a long saturday... Right driveshaft is fitted, but not on the pic. Now left to do is.. wimpus
Did inspect the underside of Fox in the beginning of the week at my work. A teacher came to have a look and said I looked nearly like new 😅 Will need to put her on the lift once more and paint a few marks, but all is well with the Gravitex. wimpus
Why I actually looked underneath.. The diff , shafts , uj's etc. Got noises, sometimes knocking, can feel play.. And yes the diff has some endfloat. The plan is to put my old one back into it, check shafts and uj's.. but im pretty sure i'm going to replace them to. That will be in 2 or 3 weeks times, when the TR5 is back on the ground. A video of the diff endfloat. 20230213_154218.mp4

wimpus
Yesterday.. another busy day on the TR5 PI Builded up the left side, sandblasted the drums and painted them, put the exhaust under it. And in the late evening..... time for a testdrive 😅 No more vibration, knocks or other strange noises. It sure is a beast.. Next is gearbox tunnel out to fix the reverse light switch. wimpus
And on the TR5 trailing arms we had a stud that went missing. Every single one that side was helicoiled.. exept that one. Bought an m10 to m8 adaptor, needed a little bit of machining (by my uncle and his Myford lath) But it worked great !
wimpus
Today a big job for Fox.. Noticed the last weeks some knocks etc. Looked up.. i bought the halfshafts from Fitchetts in 2018, so... they had done 60.000miles incl the uj's ! I had build up 2 new shafts for when Fox needed them. Took the shafts out, uj's didnt feel great. And bearing housing I could feel something to.. So time to replace the lot. Testdrove her this evening, pedal still a bit spongy. Noticed at home some fluid around the wheel. Time to find where that comes from.
wimpus
Yesterday got the hubs of the old shafts and removed the bearing housings.. Then i noticed some things.. One shaft at the keyway broke, its broken years ago said my uncle due to color. But bearing surface was great. Then the other shaft, keyway good. Bearing surface.. not 100% Typical ! This morning degreased the re-usable parts. Something I noticed back in 2018. Welded studs...
wimpus
Last few days tik tik tik noises from the rear.. Ffs.. uj's needed thicker clips. Lucky I still had some in my stock (otherwise an old cola can would work to). A friend said I could use his car ramps and do it there. And he needed some help with something else, so that worked out 😆 Now its silent ! Did found out the left rear shock is making noise and has play. Time for new me thinks, as they done well over +130.000miles ! After a testdrive I changed the diff oil. Strange color and some very small flakes of bronze.. Diff I rebuild with new bronze spacers/shims last year. Flushed it all out and put fresh oil in it. No odd noises etc. Will see ! Parked up next to my friend his other project car.. Needs lots of welding.. 1

mark powell
Fix It Again Tomorrow.... Quite fancy an X-19 though. My last Fiat was a 1959 600 transformable. (sun roof to everyone else!)

I had 4 Punto`s in quick sucession, all failed MOT needing welding to critical parts, except the last one. Some friends had a Lancia in the 70`s, even then it was like a lace curtain in parts. Mind, My son`s early Toyota Celica wasn`t much better either.😁 Pete
Pete Lewis
one of my staff had the BBC2 Lancia Beta welded up car used in the programme it did not last very long before the remains rotted leaving odd bits of repar hanging in place it used to go well but so did the body ..it went Pete
