Daily Spit 1500 body repairs & more..

Recommended Posts

Today had a look at the A-post.

Triumph missed some spot welds at the factory it seems (look at the first pic...).

Even the part behind it was cracked/broken off ages ago, crack was rusted (welded the lip back on).

So fixed it all good now, no more movement ! 🙃

Very happy that i've fixed it now.

Also sandblasted the front of the chassis crossmember outer parts, as they where rusty.

Then rustconvertor and (my famous green) zink phoshate.

Again, nice smooth welded in repairs. Wish mine were that neat. How much is left to do now, you must be getting near to completion. How is your trim holding out with all the mileage you use the car for?

I 'think' this was the last bit of welding on the body.

Still needs to be sanded down with 400 or 800 wet.

Only then we can see if some parts are flat/straight or not.

Main problem is.. she needs to be taken fully apart, so need a backup car.

+ the weather is getting worse 🙄

What do you mean by trim?  The interior ?

Yes the interior

My seats where bad after 3 years, as was my armrest.

So bought leather ones from Owen around 2017.

Beginning of the year my bottom seat cover, the stitching failed.

Another Spitfire owner that I helped out fixed it for me.

The carpets are getting a bit worn after 8 years.

But in a way, still look good.

My doorcards where very rotten..

So I got the vinyl off and made new wood (do got a new set of door cards from Owen in my stock.

Dashbord is cracking and on the sides damaged from moisture.

Planning to buy a new dash from a guy in Ireland once Fox is painted.

IMG_0431.pdfHi, I got mine from the guy in Ireland, went for the one piece as I think it looks much better than 3 with scores showing.

From Peter Heary I guess.

Thats the guy I was looking at to, know a few people that bought from him.

The think is mine is pretty light of color and.. like it so much ! 😅

Dont like the dark walnut etc dash's (sorry!)

Been cleaning up engine bits etc.

+ been cleaning up all the bolts

Engine needs a rebore  0.020 (cilinder oval)

Crank needs a regrind to 0.010

+ head rebuild.

Well..  not to bad for an engine with this milage !

Flywheel is a bit worn to.

3/4th of the surface has a deep groove.

But probably found a good used one.

Now to order parts 😅

  • wimpus changed the title to Daily Spit 1500 body repairs & more..

First parts arrived.

Had a try to see if the conrod bushes had play with the new pistons / pin.

Oh yes.. (what did you expect after this milage !)

Do have NOS (Unipart) bushes.

But they need reaming, will put them in and ask the machineshop to get it right.

Strange that when I played the video I could smell the exhaust!  Something to do with Ivan Pavalov?

My Spitfire takes longer than that to prime the fuel system after standing for more than a week but starts first time for the rest of the day.

Welll.. she was only standing for like 20hours.

She drives daily, so never sleeps longer then 8 hours 😅

I had to turn the volume down but that's something to do with Pierre Smirnoff.

The manuals used to recommend hand-priming the system using the lever at the pump before using the electric starter.

🤣

1500's never had the extra lever on the pump.

I did have an electric pump for 3 years and it started up great with that.

But failed in september and thanks to brexit I could not buy the same one again.

But did find the same just after christmas.. so maybe going to electric again..

Now an aftermarket mechanical one is on.

Yesterday startes to de-rust the bootfloor.

But found out I best get it all to bare metal..

Sadly in the early afternoon needed to stop.

Seems I had some side effects from my booster shot I had on friday evening.

Got Fox in the garage and even today didnt do anything.

I had asked to use a lift for sunday etc.

But that will be for later.

This curve had so much rust ! (Water/salt get mostly there..)

My strip discs for an angle grinder got rid of everything in no time.

(Yes the white paint is original paint)

The water return pipe..

Always find it so annoying that its very hard to remove the manifold if you need to change the gasket etc. as the tab that holds the pipe is on the rear manifold stud.

So had a look ...

Nice mod!! I've just bought one of those pipes for the 13/60, same mounting point. I'll hope it fits better than the 1200 version I bought; the mounting point on the pipe isn't even close to where it should be. I never thought of adding a bracket.
