hardhatharry Posted December 19, 2020 Report Posted December 19, 2020 Has anyone fitted a hydraulic boot lift kit? Can you recommend which strut to use and do you need to manufacture anything to fit it? Cheers

JohnD Posted December 20, 2020 Report Posted December 20, 2020 Dunno abot £8, but plenty of choice round about £20: https://www.sgs-engineering.com/gas-struts/fixed/6mm-rod They only offer, as a kit, struts for the TR7/8 at £20, https://www.sgs-engineering.com/car-boot-tailgate/triumph so you might have to add the end connectors etc, but no more than a fiver. John
dannyb Posted December 20, 2020 Report Posted December 20, 2020 This is the one I made. Gas strut 400n I believe. Would be a lot less in a fiberglass boot. You will need to reinforce the bracket on the boot lid or it will bend it. Danny 1

Luckily my boot is in primer so I can weld some extra metal on. Gas strut 400N is a tenner https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/UNIVERSAL-GAS-STRUT-SPRING-450MM-400N-BOOT-BONNET-MULTI-PURPOSE-/274406142272 Just need to find the correct ends and job done!!
Nigel Clark Posted December 20, 2020 Report Posted December 20, 2020 I fitted the Club Shop has strut for a Spitfire boot to my TR6 about 10 years ago. It's still working well, despite the heavier lid on the TR boot. Nigel
JohnD Posted December 20, 2020 Report Posted December 20, 2020 "400n". Does that mean 400 Newton's, about 40 kilograms or 90 lbs force. Isn't that a bit OTT? Dammit, a bonnet in steel is only 28kgs!
hardhatharry Posted December 20, 2020 Author Report Posted December 20, 2020 Looks good in the video thats what I'm going off and its worth a punt at a tenner.
chrisbladen Posted December 20, 2020 Report Posted December 20, 2020 Has anybody done this to a spitfire bonnet? Not done any research or anything, i Just stumbled across this thread and thought it might be a useful modification on the "slightly" heavy bonnet lol

I'll see if I can dig out the details

JohnD Posted December 20, 2020 Report Posted December 20, 2020 So many that The Club and Rimmer's do kits.

dannyb Posted December 20, 2020 Report Posted December 20, 2020 I did experiment with different forces of strut. 200n and you have to lift the boot all the way up. 600n and the boot will open on its own but is much too strong. The bracket on the boot needs to be 3 x the thickness of the original. The boots are heavy and the rack also adds to the weight on. mine.
JohnD Posted December 20, 2020 Report Posted December 20, 2020 They don't market kit unless they expect to sell a few.
hardhatharry Posted December 20, 2020 Author Report Posted December 20, 2020 These are the struts: - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FOR-ROVER-200-HATCHBACK-1985-1995-REAR-TAILGATE-BOOT-TRUNK-GAS-STRUTS-SUPPORT/232776790845?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649 - £16 and the guy that makes the brackets, none listed at the moment but just message him https://contact.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?FindAnswers&requested=adunn9&_trksid=p2545226.m2531.l4583&rt=nc Kit was £27

Anglefire Posted December 21, 2020 Report Posted December 21, 2020 I admit that I changed the bonnet to gas struts - and think they are great - but can't see the issue with the boot stay - works perfectly well.
