Gadgetman Posted December 29, 2020 Report Posted December 29, 2020 What Oil Pressure are people getting at idle on a hot Engine. ? The manual says 40 psi at 2000 rpm but what’s the average on a good engine at hot idle? On start up from cold I get 80psi at idle (800 rpm) but when hot it drops to 20 psi at idle For info the car is currently on Millers Pistoneeze sae30 running in oil
Clive Posted December 29, 2020 Report Posted December 29, 2020 New/Rebuilt engine? But SAE 30 oil will be thinner than 20/50 especially when hot. ie viscosity at 100degrees, is 11.9, but millers 20/50 is 18.5 so you cannot compare pressure until you have normal oil in there.
Gadgetman Posted December 29, 2020 Author Report Posted December 29, 2020 Yup new rebuilt engine. I’m thinking it will be a fair but higher once run in and on 20-50 as the Pistoneeze is thin! I’ll get an infra red thermometer on the sump to check what temp the oil Is getting to as It’s only got a pressure gauge.
johny Posted December 29, 2020 Report Posted December 29, 2020 Cant see that the running in will make much difference but the oil thickness and temperature does, a lot!
Gadgetman Posted December 29, 2020 Author Report Posted December 29, 2020 I meant “ once I’ve changed the oil to 20-50 post running in” not the actual running in itself improving the oil pressure 1
NonMember Posted December 30, 2020 Report Posted December 30, 2020 To be honest, if the sump is full of gnat's piss "running in oil" then getting enough pressure to extinguish the warning light at hot idle means you're good to go. You would expect an improvement with the right oil and that improvement will likely be as many PSI as you're expecting to achieve.
