Strange exhaust part?

You know one of those questions you've always meant to ask but never got round to it? Well, I got round to it.

What's this bit? I got one years ago in an exhaust kit for a Herald, couldn't work out where it went, and have since found a second in a collection of spare parts, but it's not in any parts manual that I can find. Anyone know what it is and where exactly it goes?

isnt there an odd support for the hanger under the diff  ............a bracket a clamp fits over

Pete

It hangs side-on to the exhaust and most of the attachment points along the length of the car - diff engine or gearbox - are straight-on, and so it wouldn't fit to the exhaust without a right-angled twist. There's no lower hole to clamp any other side to, to make a complete clamp, and in any case I've never seen any other part that clamps to it. It fits the profile of the Herald pipe but with nothing to clamp it, it surely must make a rattle as the car drives?

Here's the other one in better condition:

I had one with a s/s exhaust. From John Kipplings  many years ago . I aways thought it was to support the exhaust pipe in the middle and bolted to the hole in the middle outrigger bottom plate. Didn't put it on.  Didn't seem to need it

Maybe it's a fitting aid

Perhaps it's just there to confuse us all 😊

I had actually wondered about that, but can't work out which bits would need to be lifted / prised about so much that you need a special tool for it.

  • 3 weeks later...

I managed to find an old magazine with "20 tips for the Triumph Herald", No11 of which reads: "On the latest models the exhaust bracket has been deleted altogether as it has been found that this reduces any engine vibrations being transmitted to the body. The brackets will have to be cut off the pipe otherwise rattles will develop."

So: I thought mine was possibly an early support deleted in later models, but then found a photo of the bracket the article refers to, which is just a strap that runs across the chassis between the two outriggers and appears welded to the exhaust in the centre. No clues as to how it was attached to the chassis, though. Back to the drawing board, then...

the plate on the underside of the centre outrigger ( that atached to the chassis) had holes in the middle on my original chassis. I can remember they were'nt on some new ones I had bought so I drill them to make them look the same.

must had fitted to them... some how
