Pablo Posted January 27, 2021 Report Posted January 27, 2021 Hi all. My seemingly original '64 Vitesse is my first foray into classic cars. It is still positive earth, and I'd like to swap it to neg earth. Does anyone have a step-by-step guide or some tips?
Pete Lewis Posted January 27, 2021 Report Posted January 27, 2021 just look up re polarising the dynamo https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=re+polarising+a+dynamo from memory nothing else needs to change apart from the battery terminal clamps Pete 1
DanMi Posted January 27, 2021 Report Posted January 27, 2021 Pete is correct (as usual) unless you have any aftermarket bits eg solid state voltage stabiliser or LED bulbs, which is unlikely as most people would change polarity rather than find +ve earth components. So just change battery terminals over and flash (very brief touch) a positive wire to the small terminal on the dynamo and job done 1
Pablo Posted January 27, 2021 Author Report Posted January 27, 2021 Excellent, thanks for that guys. I don't need to do anything with the starter motor wiring?
DanMi Posted January 27, 2021 Report Posted January 27, 2021 no starter motor will be fine. I did this to my spit 30 years ago 1
Pablo Posted January 27, 2021 Author Report Posted January 27, 2021 1 minute ago, DanMi said: no starter motor will be fine. I did this to my spit 30 years ago Super, thanks for that.
Pete Lewis Posted January 27, 2021 Report Posted January 27, 2021 no starters are all common /same pos or neg earth and are not polarity conscious pete
Colin Lindsay Posted January 27, 2021 Report Posted January 27, 2021 Long time since I've seen that query, the magazines used to be full of them but there must be few positive earths left by now. Converting to alternator was always a very common query too. Just as a thought, Pablo - DO NOT change the wiring on anything else, as Pete has said, especially neither the heater nor the wipers. It's a common misconception that the heater blower will now run in reverse ie suck instead of blowing, and the wipers will work back to front. It doesn't make any difference so keep them as they are, otherwise you could end up melting the loom. Been there, and sadly, twice...
