Hi

I’ve seen what I think are TR6 wheels that look well on a herald and fill out the wheel arch nicely and even some deep steel wheels . Does any one have some pics and advice what lies behind fitting bigger and wider wheels .

Thanks

I don't think TR6 wheels will fit on a Herald as they have a different PCD.

I wouldn't fit bigger, wider wheels on a Herald as you end up needing low profile wide tyres, which don't work well with the Herald suspension.

yes Ive got 165/80 13 tyres on 5 1/2J wheels which do put the speedo out a little but I think they look right plus are a good compromise in terms of steering heaviness and handling bearing in mind, as Rob says, the suspension design...

In terms of advice:

Don't use too low a profile tyre. The herald rear suspension has large camber changes. I would hesitate to go below a 65 profile tyre.

175/70 13 is realistically a the "best" wider tyre to use. If you want 14" wheels, steel MGF spares or old maestro/montego wheels fit. 175/65 tyres would be the choice for me.

If you REALLY want 15 /16/17 inch wheels, MGF are the correct PCD. But you will need low profile tyres and end up with less grip at the rear, with some interesting handling characteristics as the tyre goes from one edge, to fill width to the opposite edge as the camber changes. This could be mitigated by use of a courier spring and lowering block. However, we have not yet mentioned clearance. Not only wheel arch, but also to the tie rod if the tyre/wheel is inset.

As Rob has said, TR6 wheels have the wrong PCD. The small chassis cars (and dolomites, TR7) all use a 95.25mm PCD. The only common cars that use the same are MGF and teh old maestro/montego range. There are others but rare.
