Scrappy Posted February 10, 2021 Report Posted February 10, 2021 Hi everyone, i have a 1972 2000 auto. Whilst working on the carbs i went out to test the car without the kickdown cable connected. The result was the gearbox changed up and down absolutely perfect (no kickdown though) If the kickdown cable is left disconnected, will it damage the gearbox? It is so much smoother without and i can also drop a gear manually for overtaking. Any thoughts on this or who i can approach? Thank you, Alf.
Pete Lewis Posted February 10, 2021 Report Posted February 10, 2021 sounds like the kick down cable and its valve are not set right the inner cable should have a small ferule crimped on the carb end which should sit just close to the outer cable abutement if no ferule is fitted there is little chance of diy setting the kick down valve Pete
Scrappy Posted February 10, 2021 Author Report Posted February 10, 2021 Thank you Pete, there is a ferule on the cable and have adjusted it as per different manuals and does make a bit of difference. The problem is that it hangs on to 2nd gear until you are doing about 45 to 50mph unless you take your foot off the throttle for a few seconds then it goes into top. Without the cable connected it will go into top at 30mph. Very odd as everything feels smoother. I just cant find if leaving it off will damage the box, so i guess i will have to leave it connected. Thank you again, Alf.
Pete Lewis Posted February 10, 2021 Report Posted February 10, 2021 it wont hurt the basic box operations just you loose the override valve to drop a gear when the pressures allow i guess you have checked the oil levels hot ?? is this a BW35 ? Pete
Anglefire Posted February 11, 2021 Report Posted February 11, 2021 I know Bristol Transmissions (Guess where!) do rebuild old and modern boxes (Auto and manual) and has a good reputation at least for modern ones - but is a good way from you.

Pete Yes it is a 35 Pete. I have gone though the oil level check method, hot in park and after running through each gear... Without the cable attached it performs perfectly. I would leave it off but i don't want to destroy the box unless i know it's safe to do so. Even the oil is nice and clean with no nasty smell to it. Bristol is a bit to far Anglefire Thank you both for your help, if you here of anything? Can you let me know. Alf.
Guest Posted February 11, 2021 Report Posted February 11, 2021 Alf, G Whitehouse Autos Ltd in Halesowen B62 9JE - 0121.559.9800 are excellent, but certainly not the cheapest.......... however they are very happy to advise and give their advice freely. They do a lot of work with BW35 units and know them upside down & inside out. www.gwautos.com // info@gwautos.com Regards. Richard.
Pete Lewis Posted February 11, 2021 Report Posted February 11, 2021 have you got a workshop manual the 2000 wsm has a lot of 35 and 65 data on testing and fault finding i can attempt a scan of the fault finding charts if that would help Pete

Only had to pay in tea and biscuits a well, so very pleased. Will report back. Thanks again. Alf
Scrappy Posted February 15, 2021 Author Report Posted February 15, 2021 Hi Pete, the manual is heavy reading as you say but i can't really find anywhere that says for certain it would be ok for the kickdown to remain disconnected. Bit of a strange one really. I have tried phoning the people that Richard kindly gave me the info for, but as yet i can't get through to them..... They might be closed because of furlough. But i will keep you posted if anything happens. Thank you both again. Alf.
Guest Posted February 15, 2021 Report Posted February 15, 2021 I've just tried, Alf - straight through to G W on the second ring.

Thanks Richard, i saw your post and rang them again a while ago and got through. You were right about them being helpful, it was a good job that i didn't run to far without the cable as it can damage the box. Upshot is that the problem i have sounds likely to be adjustment probably of the kickdown cable and he will remove the ferule and start again. So once we can move around again i will take it to them and let them sort it out for me Thank you again. Alf.
Guest Posted February 15, 2021 Report Posted February 15, 2021 That's excellent news Alf - as you are there they will probably give the box a running check over; any questions you have, they are the folk to speak with !! Good luck. Richard.
TomL Posted February 17, 2021 Report Posted February 17, 2021 Hi Alf, I second Richard's suggestion of Graham Whitehouse. They did an excellent job on my ZF 4HP22 auto gearbox in the Vitesse. Very knowledgeable and helpful. My understanding of the BW35 is that although it's referred to a the "kickdown cable", it needs to be connected at all times as it governs up-changes as well as kickdown. Let us know how you get on. Tom
