Martin mon
Hi everyone, Looking down at it with bonnet up my heralds passenger side track rod end has no movement from engine to hub or in rotation. However the track rod on the driver side it rotates left and right from 12 o'clock to 10 and 2 very freely. The nut on the hub is tight and the lock nut onto the rack is tight no movement engine to hub. Is it right to say the track rod is shot and needs replacing?? Cheers Martin
johny
you should be able to grab the track rod and twist it by hand or at least with a pair of mole grips on it. If it doesnt rotate then either the ball joint in the track rod end or the one to the rack is seized. Unusual as if anything they have excess play and move freely because if seized its difficult to see how the steering could work!
Martin mon
Thanks Johnny - will give the passenger side a gentle massage see if it frees off. Steering is a bit floaty thought it was excessive play on drivers side. Saturday morning job with the jack and a cuppa. Much appreciated Martin
Pete Lewis
yes replace it , to replace you need to free the taper you get a good hammer and really smack the steering arm not the TRE and the taper will let go ( obviously neds the nut off first ) Pete
