Alex Lowe Posted April 10, 2021 Report Posted April 10, 2021 Hi all when I purchased my GT6 one of the seat belt mounts was a nut which had been welded onto the window pillar above the drivers head. Now I know this certainly isnt factory but my question is more about safety and to whether I should remove this mounting point or keep it?
Pete Lewis Posted April 10, 2021 Report Posted April 10, 2021 if its just a adhoc nut welded to the existing body work that sounds highly unlikely to save your life there has to be sound structure and much reinforcement to std panels to take the stress of seat belt safety seriously this doesnt sound good , these things are life savers , best avoided the originals might be lower down and shoulder stressing but they did pass safety tests Pete
dougbgt6 Posted April 10, 2021 Report Posted April 10, 2021 As GT6s came with seat belts why is it there? And what would the MOT man make of it? If you install inertia reels they won't fit on the original mounting point on the floor, they have to be mounted on the wheel arch with a substantial reinforcing plate on the other side. So I don't see that a nut simply welded to the window pillar will be up to the job. Doug
Mathew Posted April 10, 2021 Report Posted April 10, 2021 Fitted inertia belts to my gt6, same mounting as a spitfire. I drilled a hole and welded a nut and plate to the arch. Without a nice 3mm plate welded (2 inch square) in an accident the mounting will tare through the metal.
Alex Lowe Posted April 11, 2021 Author Report Posted April 11, 2021 Thanks everyone just reinforced my belief that who ever did that was a muppet 2
Jezter Posted June 10, 2021 Report Posted June 10, 2021 The welded nut at the top of the B-pillar could have been to take the seat belt parking arrangement as shown in the Mk3 Parts Catalogue:
