1974 Toyota Hiace

Hello!
I'm tempted by this campervan. The Vitesse is obviously being too good at the moment!
Is it a terrible idea? I'm worried about parts availability and there doesn't seem to be the sort of club support support that i love!
I'd love to hear your thoughts!

That's not me in the pictures!

Love the gaffa tape repairs to the seats, sign of a true sound engineer!

As for buying it, sorry no idea, but I would have thought that a traditional VW camper would have been more in your sights. No problem with help and club support there, I'm sure. I sure that I saw a post on here about one being restored ready for sale.

This one?. https://forum.tssc.org.uk/topic/7877-my-vw-camper-an-epic-story-of-human-misery-suffering/

The V-W Camper is becoming (IMV) hugely over priced. With real "sheds" making silly money and costing 10`s on thousands to bring up to scratch.

As for buying old Campervans (Generally). The base vehicle has to be sound, capable of an MOT, and no Bodywork "advisories". I know from bitter experience they can easily become a "Black Hole Moneypit". I had 2 American Campers, which We Loved, But the cost of keeping them on the road became unsustainable.

PeteH - Yes that's the one. It's just that those particular vans appeal to the latent hippy in me. It's an age thing 'cause I've never actually set foot in one. Had plenty of Toyota cars. Very good they have been, on the whole, when all the dealer overlooked faults were sorted.

At least with a VW you can get all the parts.

The Toyota runs 'ok' apparently. It's had some welding done over the years, so i guess that'll be an on going thing. The price seems about right to me. The engine was used in quite a few Toyota's, but i think parts are still tricky. More ebay than dedicated parts suppliers.

I went for a Ford Transit, on the basis of being well tried and tested with easy parts availablity.   I had it MoTed last week and the guy said " nice little van!".   Little!?!?!

It's very easy and comfortable to drive!  Just done 250 miles down to Zummerszet ( and Middlezoy!) Feeling spry!

Far too sensible for me. I want something I can mess with and annoy people on forums with for years.

it’s my modus operandi!

You're more likely to find something that someone else has messed with and that will annoy you for years... :)

My brother-in-law bought a Fiat-based camper three months ago; it's still not on the road. Wheelarches, sills, floors, all rotten, replaced the gearbox and when he was due to go off in it last weekend he found both brake calipers had seized up and in freeing them a brake pipe sheared. He reckons he's put too much into it to sell it now...

I was offered one earlier in the week based on - wait for it - a 1953 Bedford. I knew there had to be a catch... "Needs an engine but I know where there is one...." No. Definitely not.

I borrowed a high roof extra long wheelbase transit from work in the past to tow with, really good. I was at least 15m long.

More recent Transits have issues with towing weights and payloads, they have been reduced to help lower the emissions.

So you have to get the Iveco versions.
