wimpus Posted May 21, 2021 Report Posted May 21, 2021 Hi all. I've been using Millers 80w90 gl4 oil for Fox her gearbox/overdrive /diff for years now. But as I nearly cant get it here anymore, so I was searching. Seems Triumph said to use SAE 90 gl4 oil.. So whats the best ? 80w90 or SAE90 ? Wim
Nigel Clark Posted May 21, 2021 Report Posted May 21, 2021 I use this EP80w90 GL4 from Comma for my Triumph gearboxes and diffs: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/372411853071?epid=249087511&_trkparms=ispr%3D1&hash=item56b579e90f:g:ND4AAOSwakxdTVLr&amdata=enc%3AAQAFAAACgBaobrjLl8XobRIiIML1V4Imu%2Fn%2BzU5L90Z278x5ickk8ihYa55VeJusc0Ydu6jng2ebyMdY7Au5V7BhxHe3wpYk8sjpksKnqnximHdpDwWERJ9WWSQi6Yqrz7aWXiNLG3G19tVSiAJ2%2FdtPE2Y8gUIJJAtqjXb1hSlpcxz01JXJ8LM9L66T4cV3F8rtJwlWn34vw6MPhc9oP%2BzksO9GaCa1Fe0WfFhVSzGDyz20qZyFJJfo2f1RA9e%2B4%2BZG8gNDQUPcSDW3lDBhHyKaN6jenUQlktMXZr%2FDqTmZCfEh4K5rZapN7g8ZwDImDk8rAd5aw1jENYhqEDKe9s1ax6XrtV1QdUG6ahCa8HBTECCXtPcZyO6l0hagU2MLyW1cGUMRz3aT%2B%2BMWpWrfn6cTJL3YfsBuWF5DPotL37mM5firJkOhCHmaj8ptv5v78fzrkvKjZ0G5WmI38orm%2FcEVUdorCeblNjx0%2FsztnmzZ%2BxoquZr24dPpYUSH6kVM5%2Fhd%2BwEO%2BQfZ1ajQycU5WWjVz1vp9Ay1GJvddonY%2BHh%2Fo4%2FVMKlvaCvMWTfJ1dNOHgBro51uLkWq6papDiH2%2B4Nqp%2B1%2BO12QGfsX%2BnGGajBYV6%2BqoJgVLkIb%2BfbWBHqfDKvhHDWqyyba7PoW4LCEN64m2iUIhrGZ2cVPFVKySeYYWHx8VkIImkEC%2BYiHu4VDheBQSxjOWZFCf9puOl5BxcE5cPVnFPv%2BBfAqPf7er97DxXYR96tdf%2BqGQ7wSTudfMpZ47vmcyQZv3yakNLbegoXGNlXwaNNaMg1LRU3kkjFOr6oy55edbqRvnJ%2FjhqXCrdq6gQ076DqoG969b%2FV5Jw5QuSt3ZF4%3D|cksum%3A3724118530710beef2f6ef5a4f4dae71523d1675f60a|ampid%3APL_CLK|clp%3A2334524 Halfords also list similar, for those in the UK (probably supplied by Comma): https://www.halfords.com/motoring/engine-oils-and-fluids/gearbox-oil/halfords-gear-oil-ep-80w%2F90-gl-4-1l-724443.html Nigel
Colin Lindsay Posted May 21, 2021 Report Posted May 21, 2021 I've been using Millers, probably because it's stocked locally: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/311778001209?hash=item48976ac139:g:c6UAAOSwjYldly-T
Pete Lewis Posted May 21, 2021 Report Posted May 21, 2021 the triumph spec was probably written before the days of multi grade EP oils if you want a quieter Diff use a EP140 . not/never for the gearbox Pete
Gully Posted May 21, 2021 Report Posted May 21, 2021 According to the Courier mag, the Club Shop is still posting to Europe - last time I looked they supplied Penrite and Castrol Classic. Gully
Paul H Posted May 21, 2021 Report Posted May 21, 2021 Can EP 80 / 90 be mixed with EP 90 ? How often should gearbox and overdrive oil be changed ? Thanks Paul

Thanks Paul No real reason why not. I saw some guidance that said fill with 80, top up with 90. Or the other way round.... Gearbox and diff are "for life" but that is not really wise. Maybe every few years? depending on use.

If I want to change it I have to use a Pump. Or. I suppose, be prepared to remove and split the diff?. Or turn the car on it`s side?. Pete
Pete Lewis Posted May 21, 2021 Report Posted May 21, 2021 the reason for no drain plugs is there are no contaminants to degrade the oil like that of an engine thats over its designed life , all ours have surpassed that , so if you want to change it feel free Pete

But they do benefit from the occasional, or even regular, oil change. Metal is shed from the gears (one chap reported using a magnetic filler plug that collected more steel shards than a magnetic drain plug) I would be inclined to use a suction gun or similar to suck the old oil out, maybe a magnet to help remove steel bits. Then refill with some nice fresh oil. using a magnetic filler plug appears to be a good idea too. If the car is used hard/fast and long journeys, the oil will degrade from heat, especially as most people are using mineral oils as opposed to synthetics which are longer lived. I can also see no reason not to use a GL5 oil in the diff, as long as it is yellow metal safe. (most are these days)
wimpus Posted May 21, 2021 Author Report Posted May 21, 2021 Been looking up.. Found 2 brands that I like and GL4 spec. (Pic below) Millers can be bought in Belgium (there is an dealer in the Netherlands), but a bit costly now. I change my gearbox oil once a year, sometimes 2 times. As I do 25.000kms/ year. The diff, got a drain plug installed in that. So once a year I drain the oil of the diff. Maybe not needed, but for that 600ml of oil..
thescrapman Posted May 22, 2021 Report Posted May 22, 2021 Both look suitable, assuming the Valvoline one is GL4.
GT6M Posted May 23, 2021 Report Posted May 23, 2021 Wimm, try the 80/140 stuff, get it 2.5 litre cans will be fine for the GB an Diff esp the Penrite pro gear oil, fully synt, dus,nt go off at high temps like the comma and others do most of em, commas is a real PITB it go,s black, an ends up like thin pish efter 200 or so miles M
